I see more and more people coming forward and telling people how to talk/type.

I just want to ask a general question, Why does this matter? We can all read scrambled up letters (Dom had an example in his sig a bit back) so why can we not just help them? instead off discussion how they type/talk?

It's a bit annoying as I know I started off talking like that and now I talk properly, all it took is someone to help me out and I started talking properly out of respect. Why can we not help those who dont?

Personally I have a real big issue with people "typing lik dis" cause it's firstly unprofessional and secondly harder to read. Also incorrect grammar isn't going to help search engines pick up the terms correctly.

I think it's just a personal thing, some people like to type "correctly" and others don't?

It matters alot sometimes, for examples "the admins room" and "The admin's room" as in the "english" topic i split last night. It made me think he meant more then one and the whole convo was based off a misunderstanding, however i do agree with you some people are taking it to far. I also feel the "go learn" are bad posts. They can give links to pages that explain it or even help them out a little. No need at all for some things said.

It matters a lot if you are native english, and for what i have seen around those who bitch are mostly english native speakers. I must agree with Pudda... who cares about how it is written, as long as the message passes by? Also, and most important, there are quite a lot of users from other places where english is far from being native and english might just be a bit too difficult to express the ideas, so why not putting as they know and hopefully the message will pass by when someone understands what is asked!

And let's go to the unprofessionalism (Yes Dave it's about you), you do have a "real big issue" with people typing as it sounds, but before you bitch about it or even trying to correct, look at your own posts on a not so long time ago, and see the same things you bitch about these days.

And don't even bother to correct my english as it is not my native language and i really don't give a **** if either the grammar is incorrect or if it looks unprofessional.

Not everyone has best grammar or spelling, but they can not probably help that.

I don't see how we have to look professional on a four asking for some help. And typing in correctly isn't really professional. Com'on on seriously? I play a game with a few mates, the type correctly doesn't make them a professional gamer.

I don't believe you have to look professional or type correctly just to make a post. If you don't understand it, wait for someone to post and try to click on. Nuff siad

As this is aimed at me im guessing, dominions signiture, had the full work, all mixed up, just with the first and last letters correct, which lets you read it, shortening words, e.g. Please into plz isnt that.

I am totally guilty of using shorter words .... and any of you have spoken with me in IRC chat know its BC I can't spell for crap! At least you get the message when I use shorthand. If I am writing up a letter for someone, or presenting something professionally, yeah Ill have it proof read. Ill even use spell check if it underlines the words for me and correct them. But sometimes I can t get close enough to the right word to get spell check to get it right either. I believe that the only one in this thread that has a valid point about why proper spelling and gamer should be used is Dave and the search engine argument. But seriously, get over your selves, I'm not here to impress any of you.

Note: Spell check corrected 33 misspelled words in this post. Cuz huked on fonix wurked 4 me.

Im with Dave/Oxyden because you try to learn a different language (not php ect but french, english ect) then you have to learn all the shorthand typing and slang.

"Im with Dave/Oxyden because you try to learn a different language (not php ect but french, english ect) then you have to learn all the shorthand typing and slang."

"i iz wiv dave/oxyden cos u try n learn a diff language(not php but french and shizz) thn u hve 2 learn all da shorthand typin n slang"

which is easier to understand?

The difference is this isn't a text message sure I find it perfectly acceptable if I get a text that contains;

u -> you

2 -> too/two/to

w8 -> wait.

As that's much easier especially on a phone.

Really I don't care, just as long as it's readable it's fine.

Well, much like DJK said: that type of slang is mainly for use on phones. It's much easier on a phone, because it does not have an QWERTY keypad.

I'm not native in English, not by a far shot. I've learned English from school and my grades aren't the best, but I know my grammar and spelling.

I'm just made in such a way that if a person isn't apprehended to help themselves, then why should I? It may be inconsiderate, but it makes a lot of sense.

Example: a lot vs. allot. Sounds almost identical, but has very different meanings.

How can a person know what the person wants if they say per example: "I am getting allot of programs". It has an entire different meaning from what the person actually meant.

I type how I speak, and sometimes it may be grammatically incorrect, but it's just my way. I tend to mix up my words a lot of the time, but it's how I speak, my accent, my way.

Afrikaans is my main language, in it there isn't so much "slang" because the youth understands it's importance and wants to follow it's tradition.

I'm not saying people should type/speak like Shakespeare, but at least try and spell correctly.

PS. Jordan: About that signature, also notice that the words HAS to be spelled correctly in order for the brain to recognize the word.

I find it rude that people are abusing the language in on the internet, it's plain childish. There are' much better words to express yourself to also sound beautiful.
