Merry Christmas, all the best for 2025 - thanks for the 16 year reminder. 🙂
-
I pop back every couple of years to see what has/hasn't changed. As evident by this post. 🙂
-
Glad to see it. 👍

I created a few things for this, both internal modules and external tools ( I think I’ve still got the module viewer tool too, could implement into wiki or whatever) if it gains any traction give us a shout and I’ll dig out everything I did and send across to use/modify at will. Sorry likely not to be of much further use (aha) but I’d like to see this re-emerge I quite enjoyed this engine in its first iteration.

This is still on the table should anyone be interested, I’ve not received any interest yet - I wonder if another approach would be to buy a couple of things like 12m hosting, GL license and do sort of a random number lottery style thing instead?

Okay… onlyfans subscription of your choice too! 😂

Admin team: sorry if I’m putting this in the wrong place. I had a thought, and whilst I’m not an active part of this community it was my home for many years so I’d like to give back. do any of you budding game developers have a project in mind that you would like to bring to fruition? But maybe need that little bit of support (cost of living, financial crisis, young and broke etc) I’ll like you to tell me your project idea (for the sake of clarity I don’t have any intention of getting back into game development or any kind of development in general so I’m not here to steal your ideas) I am only going to pick one of the projects but I would like to support one of you by either finding a years worth of hosting from these kind folks at MWG that now provide hosting, or by purchasing a license to one of the game engines available - I think this is only MCCodes and GL at the moment that offer paid versions. alternatively if you have all these things but need a domain I’m happy to change it and get a domain for 2 or 3 years for you. Just my way of giving back to the community and hopefully helping the next generation of youngsters getting into the game dev scene. equally if you can think of something else I can provide I am happy to consider - not sure of the learning platforms these days where you can subscribe to get tutoring etc but happy to consider it. forgive any grammatical errors, on phone - giving me a hard time at the moment. please note with any of these no money will change hand I will purchase these and transfer ownership rather than getting money for your sex drugs and rock and roll from me. Edit: will promise to check back regularly unlike my once every other month.

Any reasoning behind your choice of packages? (For those of us that have been on the slide lines for years what’s MUI, the benefits etc? ) all the best with your project looking forward to seeing what you produce, will this be a paid for engine or have tiers of releases etc?

Thanks mate good to see you all still around. Good to see the peeps still here 15 years on haha even if it’s just like me lurking around to see if anything has changed!

Yes bro! 😁

Am I safe to assume you mean around software/web development? I think it's likely down to personal experience, drive etc but also potentially location, job market, what division you're going into and really what you want to do as a career. I would probably say formal qualifications are getting less significant as we move forward and a lot of the initial getting your foot in the door is what you can show you can do ( ala: contributions to projects, your own projects, portfolio ) once you get your foot in the door then it's your own determination that'll lead to future promotions. Personally I hold a business management qualification and a bachelors in computer science, ironically my job (rather than career, but long time job) has nothing to do with either business management or computer science ( workforce deployment and management for a NHS teaching hospital ) so I am probably not the most qualified to answer. Arguably though the experience you'll gain at college or university ( if its a brick and mortar one ) is probably one you'll enjoy and look back on fondly providing it's something of interest to you and will help you in future employment in some shape or another but it wouldn't be strictly necessary. I would look at career options what interests you in software production and go from there look at jobs and what they require, look at the requirements of the role - if you can demonstrate you've done what the role requires and are proficient, then formal education would likely take a back seat. Regardless of what you decide or where you go, I wish you best of luck and hope you manage to settle into something you enjoy!

Rather than create a new post boosting my non-existent ego - I may be back around for a bit ( though the last time only lasted a month or so and then 3 years went by so who knows ) I hope the posse are still alive and kicking! ❤️

Welcome back Cronus nice to see ya around again. SRB love ya babe ❤️

Guess I'm considered to be alive (I think... existential crisis maybe averted) :)

It’s quite straightforward I’d recommend just messing around with it following the guides available ( some docs not quite descriptive enough so requires a little digging into the source ) it’s (v5) written in typescript which may help you in its readability. Always around if you get stuck or need a nudge. 🙂

About a year later... I actually started to play with the idea. Frontend Vue 3 & Pinia (though you could use Vuex 4 ) Tailwind - Generally dislike it, but I was feeling lazy, very lazy. Backend: Node AdonisJS ( V5 preview ) MySQL Likely not going to finish it into an actual game or it ever see the light of day, however enjoyed the switchover to Vue 3, there's not really a great deal of adoption as of yet in terms of the Vue 3 ecosystem but that's the fun, having to build your own UI library because there isn't one available ( although there is now, EqualUI and Oruga )

Yes absolutely, I'm not a freelancer by any means but still work many hours a week ( effectively doubled since C19 ) - so not much free time for personal projects. Much like Sniko's suggestion I do often organise my calendar by hours rather than days, especially if you don't work fixed hours but randomise week to week. If this isn't possible or you work fixed hours, set aside some time consistently week to week for your personal projects, but also make sure you get some downtime also ( burn out isn't fun ). eg: Tuesdays 7-9 dedicated time to personal projects. Obviously it all changes and varies due to personal commitments, social life etc.

Glad you got it sorted... and sorry I totally forgot about it ( someone needs to constantly poke me for me to do things next time 🙂 )

Thanks for the mention 👍. Many years out of the game but still around time from time to lend a hand.

Agreed, do also own the full suite for Jetbrains ( only really use Data Grip ) can't recommend VSCode enough - it's plethora of plugins allow for a pretty robust set up. Primary use case is Vue.
-
Yeah I agree, it's the most likely thing to happen - same with the national payrises for *some* key workers. ( not bitter ) - it's all got to come from somewhere. Equally the additional funding grants to the NHS & other healthcare services for C19 related services that magically appeared at the end of March.
-
Wait... ya'll getting free money?

I don’t really have a set up, (barely) casual gaming and most of the work I do is on the go or at various locations. An ASUS Zenbook for daily life stuff, literally email/web browsing occasional lite gaming. HP elitebook for work - I work for the NHS this is what they gave me, but it’s not bad for its use case to be fair. Microsoft Surface Pro X - this is more for video conferences and glorified note taker I don’t tend to use this for much else. I see no point in taking pictures of a couple of laptops but heck done it anyway!

It'll be lonely this Christmas...
