Zettieee Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Hey so, this has been on my mind little over a week now and haven't really found a good answer for my question/query. Is it legal to take a game, say World of Warcraft and make a browser version(2D/text based). Using non of the images and or content but taking all core mechanics of the game and implementing them? So the crafting system (don't know how it works but here's a guess): collect item1, combined item2 = item3 with a chance to fail. Would this be unethical or bad practice? Discuss? Quote
Script47 Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Personally, I think this should be fine - if as you say you're only using the core mechanics and obviously not everything. Are you thinking about actually doing this? Plus just saying berty is doing the same thing with Minecraft I think and creating the same type of game, on browser. Quote

I would say its ok to make a clone/version aslong as you don't use its imagea because they could be DMCA best to ask first :) Quote
jamiee Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 every game copies another in some way or another.. as long as its not a copy of the game i don't see a problem Quote
Zettieee Posted July 5, 2013 Author Posted July 5, 2013 Well I found an old script from 2011 for Mu Online (browser version) on github It is currently using all it's art assets from mum but the core mechanics are really well done. Even though I haven't played Mu Online I do like how the script plays. And let's get it out there, It's gameplay not graphics that players want. More opinions needed before I go ahead and do some planning. :) Quote
Dayo Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 You are able to use the concept of features its when you start using there content when it gets messy. If you couldn't use concepts of different games there would only be several games on the market. Quote
Zettieee Posted July 5, 2013 Author Posted July 5, 2013 so aslong as I replace all art assets I can freely use this script/engine with confidence that it wont get DMCA'd? Quote
a_bertrand Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Copyright is on the code, the art (images, story & music) but not on the concept of a game. Only a patent would cover something, yet they would need to be the first and patent it. So as slong as you don't reuse unique names and the same story, nor the images nor the music, I don't see why you would have issues. But you cannot call yourself a clone either at that point ;) Quote
Zettieee Posted July 6, 2013 Author Posted July 6, 2013 I might post up this engine for Mu Online (after stripping the stole art from it and replacing). Quote
Dayo Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 you can not redistribute copyrighted material this includes code, art, sounds etc... you can only use the idea Quote
Zettieee Posted July 6, 2013 Author Posted July 6, 2013 the code is under GPL and creative commons for the sound. The ART is the onyl thing that is fully protected (right now). Quote
