Hey Guys,

I was gonna post in the other thread but it was locked, as recommended I created a separate thread.

To begin with I despised spamming/advertising in my game. After some time I realized its not too big of an issue for me.

I feel as long as I work and make my game better than the "other game" then all will be well.

Also if a player has been around your game awhile, its a slim chance they are gonna leave to start over in another game.

So if you afraid of losing your players to another game. I would suggest checking that game out and see what they are doing that is making their game more worth playing than yours.

Just my opinion....

It's inevitable, really. Spammers will flee to 'Freedom of Speach on the Internet'. So, if don't you disallow the ability to post content on your site, it will happen.

My opinion every game owner dislike spammers/advertiser if it happen on their game. But most of the time the owner don't have a problem if their user is bringing them players from the other game.So its how you look at it.I don't see anything wrong with it.It's not like they come on your game threatening, swearing and all that bad stuff.

Valid point Curt.

When I owned a game, I actually had a forum board to post other games people played, to keep it all in one place and managable.

While you may hate spamming on your game, you have to accept it's a 2 way street.

If one of your players goes there and talks to a few players, at some point somebody is going to say "so, play any other games?" and then you see a couple hit your game from theirs.

It's all swings and roundabouts.

NOW -- as for a game owner doing it, that is different and completely uncalled for. Players moving around playing and cross advertising is cool, but the owners stepping on toes is crossing a line, IMO.

Couldn't have said it better, myself.

Cross-promotion should be extremely limited to an "agreed-upon" basis, which is not likely to happen with most of the generic mafia games around here.

However, I don't see that much of a problem when it's between two separate genres, completely. Again, though, this should be agreed upon between the two game owners.

I share the same opinions to some extent (as Curt & SRB)

I wouldn't mind players asking other players if they play x,y,z then proceeding to send them the link if they don't (how else is cross-game trading supposed to happen/another seemingly vital part of these games).

I would have a problem with a new player signing up, and sending out "Here join this; www.somegenericgame.co.cc/reg.php?ref=3" to every Tom,Dick and Harry. If this was the case I'd probably take some action, as it doesn't benefit anyone, and more often than not, annoys the players that are receiving the messages.

Game owners spamming other games with a link to their own game, makes me question their motives for actually creating their game in the first place.

I'm not keen on advertising in any form on any of my websites.

I wouldn't discourage other websites, but links to other websites will need to be given off of the website.

Additionally, I've had a case or two where I am held liable for any/all content produced from my website.

Thus, I never allow outbound links, without notification.

I rather have another game link spam in a game, it just brings on the challenge to make your game better then that game that is being spammed.

If a player is a dedicated player they are not going to stop playing to play on another game, as a player on one game I am always spammed with other game links before the spammer is banned, I go to those links but nothing holds my interest like the game I play while receiving those links, mafia and crime is over rated themes, there is only one crime game i am willing to play that is based on mccodes which is torn, and i dislike all mafia games on mccode engine, I have yet found one that holds my interest. I may have signed up to a lot of them, but i never stuck around to play them to level 2 lol...

So with that said someone spamming their game links should not be that big of a worry if the game link that is being spammed does not meet up with the game the player is playing at the time of the spam being received...

Here is an example... not to bash skooda's game, but if he spammed his link all over I would only sign up then never log back in, due because I have seen his type of game before its been done there is no unique feature to hold my attention or interest me in playing it... Now if he added something unique that the other game did not have I may be interested in playing, but that is a big might!

I find that there is a huge difference between other players talking about other games in a respectable manner, whether these conversations take place in public game boards or private messages. I don't find that an issue, in fact it's rather normal that it happens I'd say. However, I do have an issue though with the real spammers that send links to every player they can think of, or make a reply on every thread. And that's the behaviour that needs to go. And the worst behaviour I can think of is when a game onwer goes around other games to just spam his link...
