Redex Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Well it's been a pretty quiet day on Makewebgames today so i decided to make a thread asking people to share how they got into coding - I'm sure it will be nice to hear how different people, new & experienced members of MWG got into coding, and anything else you want to share related to coding is fine as well Kind regards: Redex Quote
Cronus Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Hmmmm.... Started playing Torn City, someone showed me this new game that was in beta mode called monocountry. I joined up, got interested after finding dabs was only 14 and convinced him to give me a copy of the script(or at least part of it). And the rest is history I guess.. Quote
Rasheed saeed Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 I found MWG randomly and got of from there. :) Quote
Curt Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 What started me to be interested in programming with PHP is a post on Craigslist a couple years ago. Someone had posted there referral link to a game under the free section. It was the first time i had ever heard about online web browser games...I signed up to the game and was hooked for months.. I played a couple different games for about a year before i even thought about making my own... After getting a little bored with playing the games I started to research how the games were made... After I learned what the games where actually made from I began pushing myself to learn these things... I found a script pack on a P2P program and downloaded that....most of the scripts where complicated to understand for me and i didnt get far with them at all... Then i learned about mccodes...i read all over the net that it was a very crappy script and noone should use it...i decided to take a look myself... I download the free one from mccodes.com and got it up in running...after a little while i relized that this script was the easiest for me to understand...at the time i had no money but i wanted the V2 script and i found out it could be download free if you search hard enough so i got it... After that I just started getting hands on...changing things and seeing how it effected the game...it was all Trial and error... I found this website and was amazed at all the free resources that were here for mccodes...i decided to make mccodes my main choice for developing the game. After a couple months of working with mccodes I began to understand what i was looking at on the scipts....i began building my own game very soon after...and had it online a couple months later. Like most most noobs i had a crappy unsecure game online and I wanted to show it off....lol So i did....i ended up getting it messed up by someone that i wont name...but that pushed me to learn security...i could not afford to pay someone to secure my game so i had to do this myself. I learned best from getting hands on with the scripts, but everyone learns differently... Only regret i have is i wish i would have discovered these types of games when i was younger...it has grown into a great interest of mine and I enjoy building something that people enjoy playing. I no longer play online rpg browser games, I actually have more fun developing my own game. Only thing one will need to make a game is TIME and the DEDICATION to continue learning and improving your skills. I started with absolutly nothing and have build up a growing game that I hope one day to be popular among these types of games. That is how i got into coding from the very begginning, hope i didnt bore you guys with my long post...lol Thanks, Curt Quote
Redex Posted October 3, 2010 Author Posted October 3, 2010 Thanks for that Cronus/Rasheed & Curt. Actually curt you're post was quite interesting, not boring at all - Thanks for sharing that information with us the 3 of you. :) Quote
corruptcity || skalman Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 hi i 1st learn about coding while doing my BTEC nation diploma in ICT level 3 where 1 of the units was web development using html/php/mysql and even since ive played torncity some 5 years ago (long time ino) it was always somethink that i wanted todo. Then during the credit crunch i was made redundent and had a lot of time on my hands so i thought about giving it ago i 1st tried the gangster legends engine where i tried to improve on my coding abillities but i didnt like that engine much then a few months later i came across mccodes i grabbed the free version off the site and had a look at it i 1st started playing around with how it looked like changing the colors making it look all pretty lol but i found this engine limited. As i didnt have much money i searched google for a warez copy of v2 and downloaded it at 1st looking at the php i was abit confused as i wasnt used to the coding style that was used as i was taught differnetly during my unit. So after about 2-3 months to trying to get my head around the coding style i got to grips with it and was then able to start making changes to the engine itself not just how pretty it looks , soon after that i had coded my 1st mod which was a stat implant mod (should still be up on here sumwhere). Then i started trying my hand at harder bits of work starting from scratch or looking it my big folder of mods at how they work and then trying to make then better to my liking. I then decided to get a webhost/domain to upload the engine where it got hacked then after making friendship with imortalthug he taught me a few things about security which helped me improve the engine so in the 12 months or so that ive spent working and using mccodes ive got from a complete muppet to coding with my eyes closed lol creating somethings of beauty (my attack recode) and some complete dogs lol and for legal reasons i would like to say that my game is a testing game and that there isnt any players and that donator and register arent working but would like to clarify that when im able to get the money to buy a v2 licence i will lol thanks sorry for the long post id get so far then think of another thing to add Quote
Maniak Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Well. I first got into coding by playing RPG's - I wast first introduced to them in Secondary School; and played them for about 3 years (what a waste of time aha!). Anyway; I found someone on one of the games I used to play on that was making his own game and I asked to see where he started and was directed to the mccodes website, so I downloaded the free version and at first I struggled to edit tables; but I was determined to move on and gain more knowledge in this new thing that I had recently found.. It was at that point that I found out about MakeWebGames.com.. I started asking a few people questions on how to code modifications for this "script" and they were patient with me (especially Jordan Palmer - as I asked him A LOT! [thanks Jordan! :)]) and I guess it went from there! Quote
Redex Posted October 3, 2010 Author Posted October 3, 2010 No problem Skalman a pretty interesting story, plus giving a detailed explanation is better than leaving it on a cliff hanger meh :) - Also Maniak thanks for sharing you're story too ;). Quote
Djkanna Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 I started playing a game called Decay Of Camelot which is why I wanted to create my own games, which led me to PHP. That's how I got into it, no really long story or pointless jabbering just straight to the point. I recieved a lot of help during the learning period from people like Magictallguy, CrazyT, A_bertrand (ASPx). Now I try to give that back and help the new ones to this community which I hope I do, and I will continue doing so until I leave this part of my life behind me. Quote
a_bertrand Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Well... I started a long long time ago... I was about 12 (now I'm 37)... It was on a mighty Sharp MZ-700 Took 3-5 min to load Basic... and I played I don't know how many hours with BASIC on it, creating stupid "programs". Then I got around 14-15Y a first PC, with floppy (no HD) and a monochrome screen. Again playing with BASIC. When I got a couple of years after an HD I started with Borland C (Turbo C). Then when I got the first windows (3.0) it was already an huge improvement, and later on switched to VB. At this point I learned also Excel Macros, and later started to develop web application in C and VB. I moved a couple of years in Italy where I used Java, PL / SQL, and Python, moved back to Switzerland and started to use PHP, IDL, and other oddies and finally since a couple of years I'm working not exclusively but nearly with C# (client, server, web, and even phone devel). For the game development, I always played a bit with some stuff, but never released anything until I played a game (KoL) and though "I'm sure something better can be created" and then started to work on my NEaB game. This was like nearly 6 years ago now. Quote
Jaaaacccckkk Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 I remember a few years ago when i started. I was just turning into high school, about year 7/8, when i came across a game i played every now and then. I then became staff for it, and by the time i knew it, i was talking to the owner daily etc. Then started out from there, after receiving the scripts that i played. But that's how i learn't php, html, css and sql really, simply browsing through the scripts, and editing it. And now, nearly 16 years old, i know quite abit, and have a 'almost' guaranteed job after i leave school etc, at a place near me! :) Quote
Jordan Palmer Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I started web developing quite a while ago, It all started off by me and some friends starting too playing a text based game, not torn or anything popular but it was popular for us,  I got banned from the game, I then got in talks to bring up the network 'Dream Chasers' We started by hiring programmers to do the work for us, then I started studying PHP and got my head around the basics, After a while I met Magictallguy who started helping me here n there, After a few months I started getting better and better. By about 6month's on I was confident with php & mysql, So me and a friend started developing our own engine, however after around 5month's we both had alot off exam's and was both finding it hard too find the time too develop for this engine,  I then got a offer working with a team off highly skilled web developers, I myself was a baby compared too what they could do, Later that month I got moved onto working on a mccodes project. I actually got better & better and then decided i'd make my own game with mccodes, and here I am now. lol  Thats how I got into web dev'ng and most off all how I ended working with mccodes. Quote
Uridium Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 When i was a kid the launch of the zx80 came out when i was 10 we didnt have many forms of PC's back then so you had to make do with cardboard and scissors A friend of mine who was a bright git used to sit for hours trying to work out how everything worked, I just wanted to play out on me new bike. Whilst i was at school though they brought in our first computer which was a big bulky BBC MICRO MODEL B it came with a disc drive not like a CDROM drive this thing was like your floppy A drive but the disc was huge... Then a few years later the ZX Speccy 48k came out and blew my mind as a kid. for once we could actually play games, My first ever attempt at coding was at Dixons in the UK which was something like 10 PRINT "hello world" 20 GOTO 10 and was mesmorised by the whole screen filling up with "hello world" being a Basic Language it was easy yet complicated at the same time and usage of words you couldnt find in a book. 10 LET A$ = Y 20 LET B$ = X 30 IF A$ <> B$ THEN LET X=Y 40 PLOT B$ Which would make a tiny dot apear on your screen was damn impressive back then ;) Quote
Dayo Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 i got into it when i was 11 making my 1st html page in notepad at school i still have the document lol it is <html> <head>My Website</head> <body bgcolor="black"> <font size="5" color="red">My name is christopher Day </font> <hr> <font size="5" color="blue">My forum tutor is mr slater and my form code is 5TS</font> </body> </html> and ever since then i have learned more and more admitidly i only learned php/sql 18 months ago when i found mocodes lite Quote
