KyleMassacre
well isn't that why you hooked the attack system?
a_bertrand
Yes as well. But it doesn't mean you MUST keep the current code, or does it? NWE is made all in module (or nearly) with the idea that if something doesn't fit your need, you replace it.
KyleMassacre
No you don't have to keep the current code at all. I am an advocate in changing up the core to suit your needs bit like I have said before a few people are scared. But the combat module I don't think needs to be touched unless you wanted to change some words here and there bit for the most part it ain't broke so why fix it. Unless of course you added a new user stat then you may need to edit a couple things to accommodate for it but chances are if your too scared to update a module then your too scared to add a player stat. My project is almost done and when it is I can focus back on NWE and I would like to update the wiki and the important files since a lot has been changed since that page was created. Ill start a new thread to ask the NWE community what they would like to see in the wiki so this thread doesn't turn into that.
DeathsAlive
Only recently took the plunge from the free dev version to the paid version of NWE. Have only been working on it for about a month. But I am already liking it. @Kyle - I have edited the combat module a fair amount already. Namely to add a fair amount of functionality and change the look. But by no means am I finished with it. I do agree with what Alain's been saying. It's only a basic engine. A foundation on which you can build on. It's not meant to be a one-for-all solution :)
DeathsAlive
Anyway. To the topic at hand. My wish is for a simple (expandable) pet system. Maybe something similar to what's available on NEAB? Edited August 14, 2013 by DeathsAlive
a_bertrand
Ok and what should do the pets?
DeathsAlive
Ok and what should do the pets? I was thinking of developing this myself. But you most likely know or have had a lot more experience with this kind of thing. Consider the pets a mini player, or simply an extension of the player. The pets are able to have various specialities depending on the breed or species. From treasure finding, combat or survivability. The pet can level up (up to a max maybe?) Must be fed, entertained and groomed. Depending on the pets specialisation it can aid you in combat or well exploring (find extra treasure or hidden items only applicable to players with that kind of pet) For instance, if the pet was survivability and you lost a battle. The pet could remove x time from the hospital stay? Or save you from hospital all together. Just a few of the notes and scribbles I have jotted down in regards to the idea. :)
KyleMassacre
I believe it was adam who requested pets too which should be fairly simple to do like feeding them, training them, and leveling them(maybe). The only reason I say maybe is because I have been trying to think of the best way to achieve this through assisting you in attacks. Sure you can hook something up in the combat system but I personally can only think of a way to make this happen by disabling the other attack buttons and make new one to accommodate the pets to attack with you and take damage and inflict damage unless you just wanted it to happen when you use your pet to attack. Maybe there is a way but my brain isn't powerful enough to think of it.
a_bertrand
I have a couple of issues with such kind of mod: 1) Is it really generic and not too game specific? I'm a bit unsure here. 2) Having a pet which helps you in exploring, or open up new quests or ares, or combat, or steal, well that means the pet basically touch nearly every parts of the game. Not something you want to do without really carefully thinking. Should the mods be modified to accept pets, or shall the mods be modified to add more hooks? Again unsure. Maybe there is a way but my brain isn't powerful enough to think of it. That's the problem I am having. Trying to work my head around how pets would affect(effect?) certain situations. The foundation is pretty sound and simple to implement. It's when you try to make them actually do something worth while it gets tricky! I have a couple of issues with such kind of mod: 1) Is it really generic and not too game specific? I'm a bit unsure here. 2) Having a pet which helps you in exploring, or open up new quests or ares, or combat, or steal, well that means the pet basically touch nearly every parts of the game. The things I supplied were more specific to what I am looking to achieve from my game. Which is why I said extensible. Which is where your handy hook system does come into play. As it's easy to run a check if the player has x,y,z and should this procedure run. If this is something you are willing to undertake. Simply make a basic template pet system. Which gives the ability to add more interactivity and hooks? If this were to be used in a gangster themed game, the player could use a pet rat to spy, pick pocket or distract. (see how much gold, strength or something a player has, or allow them to flee from combat?) I'm just throwing ideas out there. :) With hooks and run time events. It is rather easy to extend the functionality of an existing system.
DeathsAlive
Well, since this has gone stale. How about a simple pole // community voting system? :)
a_bertrand
I didn't progressed on the pet system because I don't see how to make it really working with all the modules. It would require a retouch of the given modules to understand the pets... and therefore it pretty much depends on your game. A poll system is doable and I will check how to implement it this week. a_bertrand
Ok a poll system has been implemented and is available for free for the full owners.
