1200x1200, I generally use.

Also use a grid, for example http://960.gs if you're doing fixed layouts 960x(x) is generally acceptable by most screen resolutions (on the pc, maybe an tablet I don't know), there is also a 960 type grid for jQuery mobile.

If possible, go fluid, or at least design your site so that the background of the main elements extend, even if the content doesn't. :)

Thanks, I'm not really to serious about using that sort of stuff as my work will not be good enough for publishing, I just wanted to see if I could grasp it I'vee found out I cannot from the ones I've made :P
