New Layout.. Advice?

I'm in need of a little advice for a layout i've been designing over the past 2/3 days, but now i don't know if i've added too much, or too less.

Constructive feedback is greatly appreciated, and would like you to express your opinions.

The images at the top would look better with writing underneath.

 

I like the general layout of this, i think it's quite impressive. though as i said, writing is needed.

i personaly dislike the laft navigation, i like the navigation to be clear and simple, i dont like when icons are put beside links, as 99% of the time it makes things look messy. also as pointed out above you need some sort of text under the icons ... but maby something like a tooltip or it shows the text on rollover ....

Hmm, yeah i was about to quote alex because i was going to add some sort of tooltip towards them, or maybes create new layers over the current images to show when the user can attempt another crime from time deductions.

thats a good idea jack (cba to write your name lol as ill get it wrong ne way :P) but i use something similar with themercenary.net but rather then an icon it actualy counts down second by second ^^

Updated the layout, personally i think it's much neater and much easier to navigate around.

Added tooltips to the progression bars to show the amount / percentage.

Game will now have a consistent colour scheme. (Greyish)

Better or worse? :D

Please, do your own work - this does not look good on you and has immensely annoyed me.

I was interested to find in one of your replies that you've "added tooltips" to the stats bars, not that it's unique or anything but I would have thought they would have been in place from the start considering you ripped the design from our website.

Ok, the design isn't anything special, no unqiue graphics / images, nothing that cost a lot of money... still, it's annoying.

I'm interested to know what kind of theme you're going on with this game Jack? I see your game is also based in New York City and I also see mention of the "crime force" there (we have two sides - the "police force" and the "crime force").

BTW this page for example was in this state ages ago, last month at the beginning of development.

For further clarification, I had ran this game "Criminal Force" back in 2008 with this "crime force" and "police force" but later closed it, re-developing it now.

I just felt the need to post this incase somebody comes back with stupid comments on how I may have ripped this guys layout...

I'm kinda thinking you may come back with some rubbish though, so we will see.

The status text to the left of the clock, below the header, varies. This is why the screenshots show two different pieces of text there, though the text in his screenshot is also directly from our website. Not that I'm complaining about that, just further proof of where his little layout came from.

There is clearly a copyright infringement here. Coping a look & feel is not an issue but copying the icons / art of somebody else is. So Jack must replace at least his icons. In any case we (MWG staff) don't accept and support copyright infringement as we know how much effort is required to come with something unique.

tbh it looks like jack has just ripped the html source code as it is identical plus the logo in the top left (could be an image he didnt take from the server)

But credit to the creator, its nice and simple but i still dont like the left nav :P

The icons are not my own work, though I do have permission to use them.

I don't care if there is copyright infringement or anything like that, it's called being a dick. I also don't really care what anybody here thinks of the layout (though thanks for the feedback), that's not why I'm here, I'm here just to point out that this guy is talking out of his arse. "Working on this layout for days" - yeah right.

This was done around a 4 - 5 weeks ago, it's pretty obvious he's gone and ripped the HTML/CSS. Ripping is one thing, but to rip it and then come here to claim he's been "working" on it (despite it being exactly the same with a few images not being loaded plus the "USERNAME" text in the status header) is just plain annoying. Why would somebody make up such a lie and believe it themselves? Who knows..

I have to say, I've read a lot of posts from yourself (nice to meet you) and they never seize to amaze me.

On one hand you say "copying a look & feel is not an issue", then you go on to say later that "we know how much effort is required to come up with something unique". Now regardless of the law because this is certainly something that the law would never be involved with anyway (it's not worth it), would you not support people who have their work ripped? Whether it's graphical or not. I understand that layouts can be similar, of course. However it's obvious in this case that the guy has come along and straight ripped from our website - even the content (words etc) are exactly the same. So he didn't just come up with a "similar layout", otherwise I wouldn't be so pissed off.

If you knew how much effort it was to come up with something unique, you guys (moderators, administrators here) would probably take action against people ripping other sites directly for production use. Especially when the person doing this is clearly deluded (else he wouldn't have claimed to be working on this for some days). Ripping sites to play with, mess around, learn? Sure, we've probably all done that - in a local test bed. Not for a website you intend to publish publically and you certainly wouldn't take the credit for it, regardless of how simple the layout /design was.

Anyway, I'll stop spamming up this topic and leave you guys in peace. It was quite frustrating to see some (kid?) posting this here, I'm surprised that I just happened to come across it actually! Hopefully he does the right thing and comes up with something of his own... if not, more fool him.

Sure I support your hard work on the layout, however as HTML is freely accessible and you nobody can really claim that having for example a "left" menu is his own idea and everyone else are ripping out, I would stay away from saying "you copied my layout". Also, I strongly believe that any of us copied ideas or parts of HTML tags everywhere just to make our own ideas therefore I would be more lenient over that. I fully agree that here jack simply copy / pasted the whole (HTML and Images) however it would be a lot harder to fight for the look than fighting for the images. That's why I stated it like that.

So if you are worried for the fact that I don't support the fact he copied all, then don't worry, I would say he was bad, stupid and a plain liar to copy someone else work (completely) and yet post it to ask for comments as if it was his work. Sadly kids those days are like that... I do remember some guy buying my engine and trying to re-sell it for a cheaper price on this forum.
