Multiple Domains for one game

So, when I bought mccodes, I had to provide the domain name where I would be running my game, this was to prevent a cease and desist order, essentially placing me on a "safe list". I have recently changed servers, and didn't want the game down for 24 - 48 hours while we changed servers, so I bought a second domain and redirected my players there while I shut down the old server. I now have 2 domains that are for the same game. I have mygamename.com and mygamename.net and now it has occurred to me that BC my primary domain is the .net and not the .com I provided with my licence, I am technically in violation of the terms of service and running mccodes illegally, despite having paid for a licence and only running one game. So, Do I have to buy an additional licence for the additional domain? Or do I notify mccodes that I have a second domain for the same game and get both domains on that "safe list"

When changing servers, you should redirect the users on the OLD SERVER, to the NEW SERVER's IP address.

That way they can continue to play without a big fuss, and making f=things easier for you.

When the nameservers sucessfully change, your users will be on the new server anyway when they goto your domain.

Yea, if you redirect them to the new server IP address, then you dont have to wait 24 hours...

As for the license though, im sure your site wont get taken down if its only a temp domain.

For MCCodes to take down a game, it would probally take more than 48 hours...

Im not going to send out e-mails to over 3000 e-mails telling them that we have redirected the domain, they either get redirected, or they click the we have moved, click HERE link. It allowed us to not have any down time, and all players get the same level of access. If I were a player, I would find this to show professionalism and thoughtfulness on behalf of the game managers. 24 to 48 hours of not being able to access the game would probably make me quit playing cus I would think "Oh, I'm dealing with a bunch of kids who cant even keep the site up, I'm not wasting my time." I dont know about the rest of the community here, but Id like to keep my active players/donators and not loose them to another game, there are a lot to choose from ya know.

An no, its not a temporary domain, I want both the .net and the .com to point towards the game.

Don't worry about it, as long as both domains point to the same game you will be fine.

You could always send in a support ticket for confirmation, however I don't think there is anything wrong with what you've done.

Using multiple domains for one site is not a good idea, especially in Google age.

Even if you do this, ensure that other domains have HTTP 301 (Permanent Redirect)

Nope your incorrect. Multiple domains are not a bad thing. Google will penalize if they are not used correctly and you try and register each domain into search engines.

Google may index your site without asking you. And when they noticed that both sites have same content, it doesn't end up well. And I still didn't get the idea of using multiple domain names. In Google age, no one enters awesomebrowsergame.com to address bar. It also reduces effectiveness of advertisement

I know out of many years of putting this into practise your slightly incorrect.

You will not get lower rankings for having backup domains to point at the same site. You will however get ranked lower if you try and promote each single domain name to improve your ranking.

I dont really understand what you mean by no one enters a domain into the address bar. I do it all the time rather than clicking through from an ad.

Yours is a better approach. If you don't redirect domain with a 301 , google indexes your site as another one and if it notices that both sites have same content it favours one of them. Still didn't get idea of having multiple or backup domain but even if you do , 301 doesn't kill :)

I mean everyone finds your site through search engine ie Google or ads. No one thinks that he needs an awesome browser game and first tries if there is an awesomebrowsergame.com

This also leads to another situation. Domain name is no longer crucially important.

I disagree about the writing of domain (yes you are right on searching for the game in the first place) but what if the user likes the game and continues to play they ate not going to go thro google all there life. If a game was on a .net domain the user may type .com out of habit.

Yes they don't go through google (even though there are some) after registered but it is already about driving traffic. Before registering and knowing this site, no one will come through direct typing, that's what I mean

Well, many people come from google by typing the name of the game... so if we remove those, I would say in my case most people come to the game linked from some other pages like game directories or review sites. Google is really a very small portion. I would not count on google for such site. Maybe when you start to be highly visible like wikipedia it changes, until then... google is one way to reach you but by far not the most common.
