Game engine recommendations?

Guys I need some help. Spent alot of time googling and looking so please dont post smart arsed links to LMGTFY.

I am looking for 2 different things (they are different although both things of what I am looking for could possibly have the same solution)

First, I am trying to find a turnkey game script for a browser based RPG, that I can have running in under 5 mins. Budget is $20-$300.I have looked at a few different things (such as ravans.info) and havent found what I am looking for yet. Every review I read says ravans.info is an illegal copy of mccode. Which brings me to mccode, Does anyone know of a playable demo for mccodes where i can see exactly what I get out of the box?

Anyone got any suggestions for RPG's that work well without any sort of mucking around? I am even open to suggestions for games that require licenses to use. While I would like something that I can modify into my own unique version, this isnt a requirement, and I would even consider something where the code is protected and or used under license.

Second, like everyone else in the world, I have ideas for my own MMO. But Before i spend *alot* of time, and money creating one, I really want to gain experience in running and moderating a RPG to see if its really something that I can handle. (hence why I am looking for an easy to setup out of the box game script)

For my game idea, I have hired an artist to sketch up characters, and so I know what I am looking for in terms of cost for getting a complete set of weapons, buildings and everything else drawn up, as well as I have ideas for unique mods that I have never seen in any game, (mods that will probly bring in less money, but will better balance between paid vs free players). Is mccode the best engine to use for that? should i wait for mccodes version 3 to be released or go for 2.5 redux?

how do other engines, (such as NWE EzRPG ) compare with mccodes in terms of ease of use, range of modules, security, stability and support? I know I will have to hire coders to help me for parts of the project as well as for custom mods, so ideally I need something popular where I can easily hire people to work on it (i already have code that cost over $300 that is useless as noone is available to hire to patch it and i need to avoid that mistake again!)

First of all define "running".

Most engines you can find on here are quite simple to set up, therefore if running means set up and working, then yeah all of them can be running in under 5 minutes.

You can modify any engine to suit your needs, so "Is mccode the best engine to use for that?" is unanswerable.

To go on, many people will say something along the lines of: Pick the engine that best suits your needs.

Which is what you should do, take a look at a MCCodes v2.5 game, do you need all the features it provides? If not then rather than getting a copy and ripping out all that you don't need, perhaps it would be more beneficial to say: get a copy of lite and build up.

As for comparisons: Maybe this will help.

P.S:

May have been a better option to have invested that $300+ in some learning materials, that way you'd have a better understanding and not have to waste that kind of money.

I understand none of the above is really that helpful in getting you a throwaway game, however some may provide useful for when/if you do get to creating your ideal MMO.

thanks for that link, that does help!

Yeah i did an 18 month webdevelopment course, (top of the class for all php and programming assignments) but the course wasnt *that* good, and taught us some sub-standard programming practices (the course tested us on MS-DOS commands FFS). Despite the course, when you see my work, compared to others, I am really only a beginner programmer.

Personally, I would say to forget running a game just now and learn to program first, then make your own.

Reasons?

1. All scripts already widely used, so you lose the edge on uniqueness instantly

2. You are reliant on other people if you can not do it yourself. That costs money.

3. There are security issues with all listed, so without a good knowledge yourself, it could be a pain in the ass.

Just my 2 cents :)

1. That is correct, if using i.e Mccodes or Nw-engine as they provide many many modules based on functionality and game themes. However, engines like ezrpg provides a boilerplate which let you focus on programming your own game.

2. Well, if you can't do it yourself you probably won't be able to write from scratch either way, just because you use an engine doesn't mean you code entirely differently

3. Sure, but these are patched as soon as they are notified; Are you saying that by writing by scratch there will be no vulnerabilities? I think not.

Go back to the FAQ and maybe you would get the idea why MVC and OOP has not been taken. For the template I wonder where do you get the wrong idea that you need to recode all the pages to change layout. So odd that I just released a new layout of the engine... and you don't need to change any other page.

Octarine mentioned a couple of things, and guess what, I did fulfill to a couple of them too. Odd isn't it?

On one thing I do agree, if you write your own code, you should normally know more how things are done and you SHOULD be able to fix potential issues in a shorter time. However again, as the community is maybe not composed of all experts, maybe they could be actually gain something from using some foundations. From many posts on this forums you should have seen that even a simple SQL injection is not something many understand.

I don't ask you to like or sell my work, but I would like you to avoid you to point to hypothetical issues where there isn't. That's all.

Right now my site network gets almost 10k uv per month, nearlly all traffic is hard core gamers, some of which are my friends, alliances, people I love (and people I love to hate). And I do spend alot of time each week working on new parts of the site and adding more features.

If i was to run my own game, (based on the current affiliate clicks and commissions that I earn through promoting other existing RPG's), then even if it was a common script, I can still expect to get a few players involved. (this will mean dropping affiliate links to promote my own game, and I might even make less money then I am now, or just maybe I can start to earn enough so that the server finally starts to cover its own costs).

I know there are many casino gaming scripts that i can install, and thats not something that I want my userbase to play. flash games, and all that sound like a good idea, but after playing around with them, this too is not something suitable for my site users. I have even looked into using some of the various travian clone engines and decided against using them for various reasons.

So there must be some good gaming scripts available somwhere, or at least something with a non mafia type theme....

As for security, everything has security issues. This is why the last time I ran a forum, i used Vbulletin, because its a company that has updates constantly to REDUCE the security issues with strong community support, and because its a common, yet professional piece of software, I never had an issue that couldnt be found on google.

So why cant I expect the same thing from a game engine / game script? Why do I have to even think about security issues with a gaming script? Buying a proper gaming script to me means that any time an issue is found, the engine should be patched, and updates available for say 12months to all purchasers.

When (or if) I do make the game 100% by myself, the graphics alone will cost $300-$500 and will take up to 3 months for my artist to complete. The time to work on the project would possibly take 6months as most of my time at the moment goes into improving my current sites and adding features to that. To start the project, and be unable to finish it for whatever reasons, would be a total waste of valuable $$$, to finally finish it the project, and find that I cant recover the costs, or find that running an RPG is not for me, then thats a total waste of $$$.

This is why I am looking for a product that I can have running quickly and run for a few months, where I can then make the decision if its worth investing the time and costs involved in creating my own custom RPG.

Until I find what I am looking for, I will just stick to advertising for other peoples RPG's

Well I'd advice you to look at NWE then,

You mention non-mafia theme, the default theme for NWE is a middle age theme, which can be easily changed to whatever you want, weather it be fantasy, space or mafia.

You mention you want a product with constant updates, NWE is the thing for you again! Alain is releasing new features almost every other week! And if you reaaally want a specific feature and you are okay with others having it aswell, Alain might just make it for you for free!

So yea check out NWE :)

No ezRPG is just a couple of base features but nothing which makes it a running game. I will not yet again discuss about other engines, but ezRPG doesn't seems to fit the requirements here. Now if you ask if you can make a game with ezRPG sure the answer is yes.

From a simple "download and run" point of view ezRPG is one of the least featured engine. Even GL Script does offer more in my opinion (maybe not quality wise mind you just as features toward a ready to be run game).

If I'm not wrong he also requires one which is being actively developed, none which you have mentioned are being actively developed.

Guest, I respect your opinions but dont you think you are just on a hate run against Alain and NWE now? You have linked to engines that are neither actively developed nor as secure as NWE. Some of those engines like Phaos use ancient PHP practices. NWE might not have every single best practice like OOP or whatever else you think it is lacking, but you have to agree that it is the best of the engines that is currently available. If you feel that there can be a better one, I invite you to release an engine and show everyone how it is done, I am sure Alain nor anyone else here will mind that.

Ive been trying to stay out of the debacle of this engine v. engine and Guest I respect pretty much everything you say but I support NWE. Yes, it is lacking a "few" features to make a full functional game but it does have a lot of features available as well. The only thing I think the engine needs is a more in depth clan battle system where you are able to take "respect" points away from another clan at war. After that it should be ready for a release then its just the standard fun modules to keep players entertained in between wars *hint hint* Alain :p

Alain's is the best engine available? On this forum, I'll admit it's probably the best option, regardless of whether I like it or not -- I just dislike the other options even more.

So there is a better engine than NWE on some other forum? Please show us and tell us why :)

1. Ready to be played out the box? NWE isn't.

2. Secure? Mccode isn't.

3. Actively updated? Most aren't.

1) Can you please elaborate what NWE is missing to be a working game out of the box? I am sure Alain would implement it if someone wanted it.

2) MCcodea isnt, but do you agree that NWE is? If not could you show me an example or two of the security flaws in NWE? As a paying customer of NWE, I'd like to use it in the future for a game, but I'd like you as a fellow developer to just let me what security flaws are there so that I can fix them when I work on a game.

3) You mention most arent, but tactfully avoid the engine in question here, NWE, do you agree that NWE is actively updated?

Way to take an intellictual conversation grind it into total nonsense and **** it back out (Y)

If your opinion is the best and always right and you arent open to hearing others thoughts and ideas, then there is no point of a discussion now is there? Whats the point of posting on a discussion board when you arent open to one?
