Oo-Savage-oO Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 I dont know if this is the rite place to post it but i couldn't find any where else. I want you all to give you your ideas of what you think of this. Since I am not that old I don't have a paypal, yet I could ofcourse use my dads but I dont wanna. But I wanna create a game, not for earning money just for a hobby. If I create a game on a free domain and a free host(a good host allowing minute crons, and domain s cz.cc) but dont add the donator pack system, add donator days but making it not for real life cash for in game points What do u guys say will this plan work or will no one join my game due to free host and domain Quote
Danny696 Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 No free hosts will allow minute crons :/ Quote
Jordan Palmer Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 I wouldn't advise it, running a game for a hobby is fine but running a live game on a free host with a free domain is really stupid and shouldn't ever be done. My advice would be get your dad to buy you a domain $8-$10, and a years web hosting $100 max. and then setup your own game using a open source engine Quote
a_bertrand Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 I don't fully agree here. You can certainly start with all free, no domain and no payed hosting and see how it goes. If it works then start by find a cheap hosting but otherwise it would be just money trashed as most of those hobby project end up with nothing... Quote
Jaaaacccckkk Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 I remember using free hosts and domains when i very first started out, it wasn't all bad i suppose. There's a massive list of free open MMORPG source scripts out there, some don't use crons. It's a good way to learn, viewing scripts ready made, making additions to them and then digging deeper. Good luck anyways, i don't know much free hosts anymore. I used freehostia when i started out, but i hear they cost now. Quote
Curt Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 I also started out on a free host...with nothing at all invested toward my game except for my time.... Since you are developing a game simply as a hobby and you dont want any kind of donations, then a free host would be your best choice...otherwise your hobby will cost you money out your own pocket. However if your game does gain a good amount of active players, the free host will push you buy paid hosting i believe. I will admit a free host is a turn off for many gamers but its mainly the quality and how interesting the game actually is that keeps players around... so since this is merely a hobby for you...you should be ok on a free host... Also if you end up using mccodes, there is a mod in the forums where you can get rid of Cron Jobs all together ;) Have fun with your hobby :D Quote
Jordan Palmer Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 I guess it all comes down to what script is used ect, As free hosts usually have over crowded servers so that means site will be slower and for someone with a slow internet that can be a major turn off so to speak. I would personally get a open source script and work with it, build your skills and then offer then as a service, Sooner or later you'll start earning and after a while you'll be able to run a game on your income Quote
Oo-Savage-oO Posted December 20, 2010 Author Posted December 20, 2010 I got a paid host from a friend but what about domain, is cz.cc o.k Quote
sniko Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 I used free everything when I started out, free engine (mccodes ver.Lite, domain (sub-domain), hosting). The game was popular in my school, a lot of active players daily. Using all the free stuff gained me experience when owning a game, such as setting up a story line, keeping the economy to a tight scale, and a big factor, security. If you do go with the free domain, once you have gained a little more experience with running a game, move onto a real domain, one you have to pay for. Which will bring more dedicated text based player to the game, as, in my opinion, a paid domain look more professional, therefore they are more likely to dedicate their time towards playing your game. Thanks for reading -sniko Quote
