May pull away from Web Dev :/

Hey MWG Community,

I've been thinking over the past few days about me being involved with Web development, and if it's actually for me.

I know I've been web dev'ing for a while but I'm in my aLevel year and wondering if i still should carry on with web development.

I'm currently studying Psychology, Computing, Business & Media Studies at 6th Form.

However, if i broke away from web development, i wouldn't just be bumming around, i would possibly take myself into the 'world' of video editing for xbox 360 games such as Modern Warfare 2.

Im a gamer myself and ive had alot of experience in graphic design, now then i stopped working on graphics and started a project called Strike Rangers.

This particular project involved several languages which i couldn't completely handle by myself and im always asking for help from Sniko and other various people (thank you ;) i appreciate the help) due to school work and another upsetting event that happened in my life not too long ago - which i don't wish to share.

So im asking you for your comments on my current situation, at the moment im inbetween video editing and web development but im not sure which one to "drop" and which one to put my full attention too (taking into account school work ect)

I havn't yet produced any video art work because of the fustration im having with developing StrikeRangers &/or school work - it's hard for me to understand whats causing the frustration. But if i were to 'drop' web development and go into Video Editing, ill still come here and show ya'll my youtube channel and work (this will still involve graphics, but only youtube backgrounds)

So please, i need your honest comments about this and everything you say will be greatly appreciated.

Well is kind of sad what you have to do after spending so much time with it, I get you. But personally mate. Pull away from Web Dev. More money into the other option mate. :)

Anyway Web Dev does get boring at times, and it's not that enjoyable when you first start. Like you I might pull away from Web Dev and start getting alot better with PS. I've always enjoyed Graphics.

Now I know what you might be thinking that, that did not help you in anyway.

What I'm saying is just step back from Web Development for a while.

Work on school and life in general but keep Web Dev in mind for the future remember it's good as a hobby.

Okay thank you for your comments & support.

I currently have a Dell Inspirion 15"6 Laptop (Or something along those lines)

Some people have suggested i do both video editing and web development but i've had a 'slight' test run with a Dazzle capture card & Pinnacle Trial and my laptop wouln't configure with both.

So now, sorry for all the asking im doing, i again ask for some help from the MWG community to provide me with some trustworthy, reliable and safe links to brilliant laptops that could help me with Pinnacle, Adobe AfterFX, Song Vegas and Dazzle Platinum devices/programs.

The laptop must have good Specs and a 4gb Ram.

My maximum price range is idealy £400, but prehaps i could push to £500/£600.

- Again, although its alittle over my price range, would this following laptop reach my needs (sorry im no good with computer parts/computers & hardware)

Well, video editing should normally be done on a uncompressed stream, which means a lot of disk usage. Also, when you publish, the PC will need to compress the video which requires both a fast disk and a good CPU. For all that laptops are not very good and a desktop machine will be both cheaper and more adequate to the job.

If you really need a laptop then go for a fast CPU and a fast and big hard drive... But then, 400£ is a bit small on budget.

So you will need some compromise... either you will have a cheap laptop which will do the job (but slowly) and can't work on big video, or you will need to go for a desktop and even maybe build it yourself to pay like 1/2 of the price of pre-made PC.

Ah okay thanks for your replies regarding a video-editing laptop.

I'd rather a laptop because on the weekends ill go to my mums house and it's nice to take it with me - but i suppose its 2 days out the 7 which i could manage without it.

Is there a laptop out there that specalize in video editing, or is it mainly desktops?

The other reason why i tend to focus on laptops is because we've recently downgraded in the size of house and i now have to share a room with Sniko, which lacks in space - and a laptop would be most ideal.

If i were to do video editing, ill mainly focus on 2minute - 5/6minute Modern Warfare 2 gameplay edits. With the time scale in mind, sorry, would a laptop do the job and in reasonable time (Laptop wont lagg, Hold alot of my work including school work which i may hold on there, and still run fast)

Im not too fussed on the price - unless its rediculous and reaches the £1,000 mark - but im looking for a laptop (preferably) which has the spec's well worth the money.

I would be doing the research into it myself but honestly i have no idea on laptop specs. Sorry :/

One other thing, sorry, was the Acer one any good or not?

Sorry i forgot to add, what's brand of computer do you use - so i can get a rough idea who which system brand is reliable, fast and if something goes wrong, i can possible get your help :$, Sorry again :)

My first laptop was Dell which i used for about 6 years. After having a good experience with Dell i went out and bought another laptop (Dell inspiron 1545, Cherry Red) for about £430 which i think is pretty good. Overall my experiences with Dell laptops have been good ones, so i would advise Dell. Also i think one of my freinds brought a Acer laptop and it had problems within the first week. I would advise you to buy Dell because they are fast & reliable. Hope this helps.

Dell, Acer, Asus, Toshiba are ok even if Acer tends to be slow machines. For 2-5 min video editing for the web a laptop will be fine. Then you need to think about the screen, weight and battery life:

- Bigger screen == less battery == more weight

- More battery life == smaller screen

I have an Acer Desktop and a custom desktop and an Advent laptop (never ever eveeer get one).

I'd say Acers aren't to bad, to be honest with you the best PC I've seen that's capable of video editing is a Mac, however Mac's lack in so many other departments I'm not sure it's worth the grand that they cost.

Yeah acers arent very bad. Macs arent so good though. As far as quitting web dev, youll make more money and possibly have fun with graphics and video editing than you would doing web dev. If your really interested in all of that though, you can learn C and stuff like that. Make some software, ya kno, thats money right there if its useful.

Learn is is useful, but it would not be my first choice. Pick Java or C# => easier and you will get anyhow any kind of professional work with those.
