This is true, It looks very good. I was thinking about that too, I just had been wondering if it would get used as much. But yeah that is my second choice

to not merge into game, and have it stand-alone.

you could always use an irc client like wsirc i made a intergrated version for mccodes

While I agree, You could well do use an IRC integrated chat room

 

However I don't use it for a number off reasons

• I'm not keep on IRC
• Alot off people aren't keep on IRC
• Most can be spammed
• You cannot delete single line

But as I said, It's a good idea, Just has alot off downsides as most chat server/platforms ;(

You mix the idea of a "shoutbox" with a "chat". A chat is in real time and you cannot delete a line. Also, if you join you normally don't see what was said before you came. For those reasons most of the time an IRC chat is better than those PHP chat you can find for a lot of reasons. Spam is not an issue as you can kick out spamers and ban them as well...
