  1. I want to warmly welcome to our staff team the following great and well known mates: Mr Equinox and Mr Paul Evans (known also with a lot of other odd names) Both have the super moderator role which means they have the right to moderate any thread and will actively participate in the forum life (as they always did but yet a bit more I hope :P ) I hope everyone will join me to congratulate them for this new job of them.
  2. I installed it some times ago, did some trials, and must admit I didn't like it at all. First of all it is a bit like python and as any script language doesn't come by default with an IDE. For me this is already painful to find a right IDE and have all integrated. Without that I would not consider to move to any language today. Also, the on Rails framework do offer a few nice ideas, but working with 3 files for every single little thingies, no thanks. Now saying that PHP programmers are moving to ruby? No I doubt it. There is some people moving / trying ruby, yes, but that it is the new language of choice for sure not. Also the shared hosting providing Ruby are not as common as those providing PHP, Java or .NET. This is also a big drawback. So overall I would personally not pick it up. I would either go for PHP or Java or .NET
  3. Certainly a scam. Good that you didn't went further!
  4. You may already download it: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/mozilla-firefox-final-4.0-download,12427.html It's the final finally! But... what should I say? It look as any of the release candidate I tried so far. So here is my review: Firefox 4 is fast, but Firefox 3.6 was fast enough for me (yes I know it's slow when you check the benchmarks). Memory usage seems a bit the same as before, as well as most of the browsing doesn't seems so much different to me. I miss the status bar... Don't know how to bring it back. Something I really don't like is the look & feel. It doesn't look better than the older version, actually for me it's uglier than before. First thing I directly changed is the menu bar, as the mini menu bar doesn't have even 50% of the options as the old one. Over 3D acceleration, it seems that by default it is disabled and that you must configure it via the about:config trick. Or at least it seems so to me. That seems to be an odd choice. Tabs are also not as well handled as in IE, and the search is still split from the url. Overall I'm not 100% enjoying the upgrade, actually I don't find it a better version than the previous one and for me it seems they just ran after the competitors (IE and Chrome).
  5. I'm also a developer, but unless you do heavy computation with JS which I doubt you do, you will hardly see any difference. And my sites do have a lot of JS (ajax or not), so yes I know very well it could have an impact. However the differences are way too small currently to see any real difference.
  6. I do fully agree that IE9 doesn't support all of the HTML5 (nor any of the browser do as HTML5 is not yet fixed), yet they lag behind with the number of things they do support compared to chrome / FF 4. I do fully agree that they took too long (actually not that long since IE8) to come with a new browser, problem is that when they released IE6 they got 90% of the market, and without FF they would still hold it. FF took slowly away from that, and then came Chrome which helped to further reduce the market share. So MS took way too long to wake up and see that they should actually move away from IE 6. Javascript benchmarks? Sorry but I could not care less. What I want is see a difference in day to day. I don't care that my browser can crank up a few more points in the XYZ benchmark if at the end it is only 0.001 sec difference in a loading page. So all those buzz about those benchmarks are useless. It's more a matter of Chrome to say "why don't you use our browser as we are the fastest?" than any real difference. IE8 was slow. IE9 is as fast in the day to day browsing as chrome. Self tested. 64 bit browsers? Do you believe anyone will use it for the moment? No, as all the plugins (Java, Flash, PDF and whatever else) are ALL running in 32 bit. Which means by default the browser is 32 bit even on a 64 machine. So they still have time to tweak a 64 bit version. BTW don't think that the code is the same, a JIT or other in 64 bit is not the same as a JIT in 32. And FF and Chrome run both in 32 as far as I know... BTW I will continue to use FF 3.6 for the moment ;)
  7. Sorry Kieran-R no, MWG has never been taken as the purely McCode forum. They purchased it, right, but when they did it, they said they would keep the things as they are which means McCode is just one of the facet of MWG not the whole story. Also I personally don't see McCodes on the main banner, thats what I see: If the owners decide on the other side to change that and make it indeed McCode centered, then I doubt most of the current staff members will continue their work, but for sure I will not.
  8. Danny696: you are the typical guy which doesn't see much further than is nose. Sorry to say it. First of all, you can't judge without trying, second NONE of the browser invented all by their own. Chrome? Took webkit out from safari which took it out as a fork of KTHML (KDE HTML Browser). Tabs are not new, as well as splitting each "windows" / "tab" as process. Windows Explorer can be set like that since AGES (explorer is the directory / file browser), way before Google Chrome ever existed. Advantages: separate the process, sandbox them, and if one crash it doesn't crash the others. Drawback, more memory is required (a lot more). I could go on forever by who copied what from where, really in the IT industry as well as any other, none really invented all from start, instead you take an idea and improve it with your own. Same for the games ;) For all: if you check tomshardware review, you can see that they consider IE even faster than Chrome and any else on many of their benchmarks. Sure IE9 is late, but Microsoft own still the biggest share with IE (all versions). So maybe they will recover. Yet honestly I would say it's MUCH better for us users to have multiple solutions instead of a single company as it would stop the improvement. For developers, having so many different browser start to be really painful, and if you try to make a site which works with FF, IE, Chrome and opera and is not the simple HTML one, you know what I'm saying.
  9. As I stated we propose to basically downside McCode and bring it at the level of any other script, why should we force then people to have a valid license to post? Also we don't really have a complete link with McCode (basically we are not part of McCode) and we hope to be even less linked to them, so again it would be a non sense. Now is the owners want to create a special sub-board for it, and handle it themselves then fine. But it should not be under the control of the MWG staff.
  10. I don't believe so, we could certainly simplify but you McCode users must tell us.
  11. Never said the PHP Dev team should now work on frameworks. Simply I hardly see what could be implemented on the language without breaking it. Something I would not do either. Also frameworks are not good only for RAD. Frameworks do allow to do more complex things while loosing less time.
  12. thanks for the formatting. Please ALWAYS use the right BB code while working with PHP and do include all tabs and returns. Otherwise the code is barely usable.
  13. What are you using which doesn't work in IE9?
  14. Got about 1 hour down time today... so no the issue is not yet solved.
  15. If any of you wonder where PHP 6 disappeared I shall here explain some of the issues / results: Basically until march 2010 PHP developers where talking about PHP 6, which should improve the Object Oriented design as well as much better support for unicode (which is one of the mostly used way to support special characters like Chinese or even accents). In March 2010 the PHP development team simply saw that there was way too much work before reaching all those goals and decided to bring back most of the PHP 6 work to a version of PHP 5 which then become PHP 5.3. PHP 5.3 introduced therefore breaking changes (which means that by default PHP doesn't work anymore as it was until this version), which means, if you have an host with PHP 5.1 or 5.2 and then try on PHP 5.3 you may have issues. For the latest news, PHP 5.3.6 has been released last week which fixed a couple of bugs (more than 60) as well as improved a few things. So when will we have PHP 6? Well overall there is no news about PHP 6 nor what it will introduce. Yet you should think about yourself, what would you really need out of PHP? What is still missing to the language? I would personally answer that beside a cleaner OO implementation, PHP should not be changed that much, and instead more work should be invested in some of the interesting frameworks. Do you have opinions yourself? Then please share!
  16. I'm sure most of you don't like Internet Explorer. And until IE 9 I must say I was one of you. Don't take me wrong already, it doesn't mean I love IE 9 and it is now my browser of choice. No, but it's is simply an incredible step forward. A much much bigger step than any previous IE upgrade in my opinion. What changed: - IE 9 interface is actually one of the cleanest out there, and one which let you customize it as well. - CSS support has been improved as well, welcome are rounded borders and much more. - Speed, speed, speed my dear! Yes IE up to 9 was slow. Showing tables with more than 200 lines was a real pain. Now this is history! It's as quick as Firefox or Chrome (for the browser I mean, forget those benchmarks and whatever. When it takes less than 0.1 sec to render you will see NO difference). - Developer tools, yes those was there in IE 8 (maybe 7 as well) but now they are a bit better as well. - Full windows 7 integration. I really love it. - Multi processes (one process per tab? page?) so if something crash, it doesn't crash all your browser windows. - Hardware acceleration: all major browser do have it to some extend. Honestly I'm not 100% convinced by how faster it will be. - Enable disable plugins from a menu (and it informs you when one plugin start to slow down your experience) What is still missing: - Not all is perfect for example we are still missing an integrated spell checker (yes you can download a plugin). - Installing requires reboot. I know why this is needed, however it doesn't change the fact it is painful. Overall, if you run at least partially on windows, you should install it (Vista, Win 7 only guys). IE is still market leader with more than 2x as much as the 2nd browser in the list. So if your site doesn't run on IE, forget about attracting users. 17. Hi All, Just for information, we are currently discussing between the current "staffs" / "admins" / "owners" / "moderators" about some changes in the MWG forums / community. Lately MWG was somehow considered a McCode only and official support board. Specially since McCode owners purchased it. Also somehow the negativity of some members ( I will not give names, so don't try :P ) annoyed some new members as well as older one. Finally, as you may have guessed, Jordan stopped being in the management of the board (yes without notices at least to me). To clarify a few things, and to try to improve the community forums our dear Nickson started to kick our own lower part. For that I must thanks him. I choose to not wait forever and let you all know what we are currently thinking and what will be made in the coming weeks: We (volunteers staff) want to take more control and invest yet more time into this project called Make Web Games, which must and should remain primarily a COMMUNITY of developers or people wishing to develop WEB GAMES. This is independent of the script, language, tools the developer or the team is wishing to use. So what we want to do really? Basically change the mood of this board which was starting to be a "McCode" sad board into something more dynamic which promote developing of games or others games related web projects. Try to help each others, and certainly not flame anybody, and show that there is people still interested in this site. To do so, we will work more close to each others using our IRC channel to discuss ideas and each of us may get one or more responsibilities. Nickson will likely take the leadership for a while which means he will not be the one which does all, instead he will simply have the right to judge / rules in case of mis-understanding between the staff members. The site will not be McCode centered and will try to promote a more open minded community. We will be a lot more strict about spammers /flamers / scammers / cheaters / hackers. Which means, if you just have fun so far posting stupid answers like "this is crap, my 2 years old dog can do it better!", forget it, we will kick it and if you continue will kick your account as well. Yes sir! - The composition of this site board is not yet fully defined not which task will be taken by who. - The owners didn't officially accepted our idea, neither they did refused it so far. However I tend to believe it will not be an issue for them. As first effect, I moved the McCode section under the "Game Engines" section and shows that we will not put more effort into McCode that we should about others. I changed also a bit the FAQ of MWG. More will come for sure.
  18. Ok you don't have yet clear ideas of what you want basically. That means it's too early to start. Also forget to be able to release for this year. A game take more than 1 year to be developed unless for you a game is installing McCode change the look and let it run.
  19. If you want that people join your team, you should motivate them: - What did you do, and what are your skills (must be something impressing otherwise why should they join?) - What do they gain by joining? - What is your project as just saying you will do a zombie game is way not enough, and don't say "it's secret"

    PHP Emails

Using your ISP is the best way to be banned. Honestly you don't have any good solution for this problem. Why? Because if you use a trusted SMTP and one of the person which receive it report the mail as spam you risk to be banned from the SMTP / ISP. So don't use email verifications as they are simply annoying.

    iMakePlay

Will it be free or a paid service? Or free for base with additional options payed? What exactly can the "game owners" do? What sort of customization? Can they upload custom PHP or just do modifications via the panels?
  22. It's better but I still get lags... and I doubt it is sooo much loaded.
  23. As long as the shared host is fast enough and they don't kick you stay with that. You will need then a VPS or a dedicated server in both case you must have some knowledge of Linux sysadmin, otherwise either you will fail making your game work and / or you risk to be hacked if you don't apply the security patch. A VPS or dedicated server is also required if you need to run software which is not standard for example a custom server for a chat or whatever else. A VPS is normally much cheaper (around 20$ per month) compared to a dedicated server (around 100$ per month). So be sure you do have those requirement before jumping on one of those. You own server hosted somewhere (called co-location) can be a cheaper solution than a dedicated server specially if you keep it more than one year. Other option is to have a good Internet connection (either balanced downstream / upstream or with an upstream bigger than the downstream which is not the normal configuration) and handle the server from home. However count the Internet connection and the electricity bill to see if it really make sense as this is normally not a cheap solution with the advantage to have directly access to the hardware in case you want to upgrade or need to fix something.
  24. Honestly it doesn't cost even 2sec to put the tabs correctly if you use an editor which support it. Some use Komodo or InteliJ or Eclipse or NetBeans whatever all those will put the tabs for you while you edit your code. So really there is only to gain while writing correctly a code instead of making a huge mess.
  25. Yes and next time I ran it the script with tab took even less time, as said the little variations are due to the server load. Sorry Danny696 you are completely wrong here as it has a so small impact that you will not see it even with 1000 calls like I'm doing (and this is to force PHP to re-parse the script each time). So again, removing spaces and tabs is purely stupidity.
