Taxed Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Hi, I was browsing w3schools and found some very usefull statistics that I thought I would share. Ill will be giving my thoughts on the different statistics to see if we can use them to our advantage. Browser Statistics IE8 = 13.5% IE7 = 12.8% IE6 = 10.9% Firefox = 46.4% Chrome = 9.8% Safari = 3.6% Opera = 2.3% Looking at these stats we can see clearly that firefox is the most popular browser. But your thinking about how these stats could help you. Well, for the most part it wont. The only thought that I get when looking at these stats is that they show you what browsers you need concentrate on when your checking the compatability of your sites. For the most part the popular browsers are all quite up to date with current web standards and theres plenty of documentation around if you do come across any problems. Javascript Statistics JavaScript On = 95% JavaScript Off = 5% Now this to me is a very interesting statistic. Ive heard many people talk about not using JavaScript because not everyone uses it. Now JS has a fairly bad reputation, but its actually a very powerful language. When its understood it can be used in some fantastic ways. The Neab Engine by a_bertrand is a good example of what you can do with JavaScript. These stats say to me that there is no longer a problem with JS losing you traffic. In my mind JS is a wonderful language that can really bring a site to life with functionality. Display Resolution Statistics 640x480 = 0% 800x600 = 1% 1024x768 = 20% 1280x1024 = 18.2% 1280x800 = 17.3% 1440x900 = 10.5% 1680x105 = 10.0% 1920x1200 = 4.6% Now this suprises me. I didnt think so many people were using larger resolutions. As an artist this means that my work would be improved if my designs were catered to larger resolutions. Its important I think to keep focus on the behavior of web users. Adapting to the requirements of the majority is an essential skill in any trade. With the web at our hands you can dig up all the statistics we could ever need to stay in with the most current trends. I think all these statistics will in some way help me shape my products to maximise traffic and revenue. Take a few minuets to be mindful of what the statistics mean to you and let your mind wonder and see what pops into your head. I hope you found this as insightful as me, thanks for reading. Quote
Zeggy Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 You should remember that IE is still the most popular browser. W3Schools is a web developer website, so obviously their visitors don't represent the average user. Web developers tend to know how to use computers better (duh) so they know they shouldn't use IE. The average user probably doesn't know this, so IE is still the most popular browser. So, the headaches haven't disappeared yet for layout designers :) Quote
mdshare Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I believe I showed that once in a previous post comparing stats of MWG users with CETWG users, same story more FF users at MWG and more IE users at CETWG Quote
Guest cablebox Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Chrome is the new "thing" for me. I love it! Now that it has apps. I do not think that it should be behind FF. It is so much faster as Firefox slows down when added apps and Chrome does not! Download Chrome! It will be the best choice you made! Quote

Jordan Palmer Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I've used them all. I love my baby and that's firefox (L) Quote
Guest cablebox Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Chrome is for the win.....just because Google made it :P Quote
Jordan Palmer Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 In that case  IE is for the win cause Microsoft made it ;] Quote
Zero-Affect Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I have IE, Chrome, Safari, Opera and Mozilla Firefox but with all of them i still would use Firefox over all because of it being very reliable. Chrome is just another Google project, they make enough money why even support them. Quote
Zeggy Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Chrome is just another Google project, they make enough money why even support them. Really? I tend to pick my software depending on how they run, not depending on the company behind it :) I find firefox is too slow (compared to chrome) and has huge memory leak issues. Chrome has its own task manager for ending tabs or processes that are using up too many resources. I am able to have several windows of chrome open at the same time, each with at least 10 tabs, while using less memory than firefox. And now that chrome extensions are out, it's *almost* as useful as firefox. Quote
Zero-Affect Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 It's not mealy the company but on that subject why don't people use windows? because of Microsoft behind it... I use firefox due to the many years i have used it, i hate IE and chrome doesn't seem to like most websites. Quote
Zeggy Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Well, chrome is improving pretty nicely... It's funny, it's already overtaken opera and safari :P And umm... people do use windows, windows is the most popular os! Both for personal use and for large businesses that require a good computer network infrastructure. It's because of the very fact that windows is commercial that allows it to better than say, linux, because they can use all that money to provide support to businesses and put out fairly decent software (and advertise of course). I'm not saying windows is better than linux, but in some ways it *is* superior. Seems like the topic has gone from user statistics -> browser wars-> os wars :D Quote
mdshare Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 I like chrome a lot, for daily usage always chrome it's actually rare I fire up FF lately Main reason is as what zeggy said, huge memory leak and that for years and they never fixed that leak. Also as each tab is actually a independent browser, if one tab crashes it doesn't crash your whole browser like IE or FF. Quote
