For a game to move from a shared server to a dedicated server?

Have no idea when this should happen, and im curious...

Amount of users?

Amount of users active?

And any other information would be appreciated..

(My games struggling to load, is it time to upgrade?)

Ive ran games for about my entire internet life.

What is the amount of users you have active?

turn based? or real time game?

Server specs for shared services?

might be they over sold the box and its dragging.

crons and poor coding can slow things as well. if the code is perfected and wunning fast pages load faster as well setup cache on all images and set some not all things as global settings and more indexes on your databases for key items searched for.

If above already exists and your site is running slow then its possible you might need a VPS or dedicated box.

Re: When is it time...

My game is a real time game.

Shared server I'm currently on: http://www.galaxyvisions.com/cpanel_hosting.html

Caching, do you mean something like this: http://www.ilovejackdaniels.com/php/cac ... ut-in-php/

My current game stats are not to high..

Total Users: 2801

Users Online: 20

Maximum Online: 31

Maybe it may be the code, I've re-wrote all pages to parse faster, Maybe i should go over all the queries.

Re: When is it time...

Hey iso my game takes like 2 secs to load and my game is kind of big here are my statistics:

Online Statistics

Users online in the last mintue: 7

Users online in the last 15 mins: 11

Users online in the last 30 mins: 12

Users online in the last 45 mins: 14

Users online in the last Hour: 17

Users online in the last 24 Hours: 106

Max Recorded

Max online in 1 minute: 24

Max online in 15 minutes: 40

Max online in 30 minutes: 44

Max online in 45 minutes: 50

Max online in 1 hour: 57

Max online in 24 hours: 233

As you can see my 24 hour basis is 106 and well as far as i know my host is fast wich is www.byethost.com but the only thing i can recomend at the very moment is buying a .net domain like www.amazon-survival.net and then redirect your .net to a vps or dedicated or even a better host then once youve got the .net set up you redirect all your pages from .com to your .net then you transfer your name servers from the .com to .net so basicly your users can carry on there game with out you fiddeling arround with it..

Re: When is it time...

it still dont seem as if you need a vps or dedicated just yet.

I have a dedicated box that i lease our shared hosting on and each site averages 25-75 online at a time with there game sites without slowing.

some pulling in upwards of 80GB monthly.

I would ask your host whats up

Don't see the logic in this? How will it speed up my server?

Re: When is it time...

Well i think the only time to move would be extreme popularity in your game and when your game has a steady income of money and is just starting to lag...through alot of traffic that would be when i'd move, but if your game is fine how it is now then id stick with what you have i mean it would work out cheaper and give you time to save for the move is money is an issue..

Re: When is it time...

don't forget that shared hosting plans are usually on top notch servers, quad processors 8Gb ram etc

dedicated you start at 512Kb/1 CPU and results could be worse than you was on a shared plan...

that costs already around a $99/month ...

Re: When is it time...

Also small hosting company's usually offer faster hosting with better support, due to there being less sites on each server. Big hosting company's put as many sites as possible onto each server to save costs. Stay away from the classic teenager in their bedroom paying $5 a month for a re-seller account on some crappy host.

Re: When is it time...

I would probably say it's time to move when your host informs you that you're using too many resources! Before then you shouldn't find a reason to move I don't think, other than the host itself not being great.. i.e. if your site is lagging but they haven't raised any issues with you regarding your site imparticular, I would look at moving elsewhere.

Somebody mentioned purchasing an alternative .net domain for testing purposes, you should be fine testing using IP Address to access the website or if you like add an A record to your DNS zone for the domain so that you can access via hostname..

But yah, you will know when your host lets you know.. but then again it isn't a great idea to just sit and wait until it happens.. a good webhost shouldn't really just cut your website off though, they should notice a trend in resource usage and inform you, asking what action you would like to take etc.
