Does paypal return anything? It should send you a mail whenever an IPN request happens at least it does for me. Are you using Paypal Sandbox?

Not using Sandbox and when a user pays for it take them back to the site.

I'll come up with a solution later tonight. Have had the same problems.

Also, the give_item could be done easier

   Give_Item($itemid, $user_class->id, $quantity);

Check lines 61-63 in your IPN

Try this:
