It's going on 3hrs for transfering 300gb of data to my external HD... ;\

When I read my book, I did an assignment or two in the books after each chapter. Each chapter if you follow in order uses previous chapter material. After awhile your start to remember things. Your not going to remember everything, PHP has over 5,300 built in functions. Once you have a solid grasp of PHP, your start to notice how the functions are named and if you can't remember certain stuff "exactly", you can just use the Documentation at php.net. Like string functions start off with strWhatever or str_whatever. Most functions related to array's use the word "array". I would just follow the book chapter by chapter and pick a few assignments once done.

They been running for Many years. These type of games was "new" at the time to many people. Now these type of games are flooded all over the internet. Good luck to anyone getting to where those sites you listed by starting TODAY. Game's like those have already established a user base, popularity and reputation for themselves before there was as much competition compared to today. Strickly PHP text games is dying. It was good for investing time into such a thing before every type of game you could think of (that people would play), already dominating the market and people could play on mobile. Now people on Mobile devices play HTML5 CANVAS (JS) games, or APPs. I began developing game stuff before I learned PHP. Lately I been thinking about how disappointed I am in myself for not pursuing PC development and choosing PHP instead when Microsoft was switching to the .NET framework. Don't get it wrong, I still like php to some extend, but not for game development. For some other stuff you said, i'll just throw some quick answers to your questions since it's a little off topic. oRPG - I thought it was a good idea at the time, I havn't added any new features in prob a year. There was a glitch (not security) that caused games to go down for a 1-2months that I neglected even knowing what it was and took 10 minutes to fix once I got around to it. The MC-Codes mod was an experiment to see how fast I could turn a non-dynamic site into a dynamic site. I didn't charge people for it, as it was my way to give back to MWG from NEVER creating/releasing a MOD and providing this place for coders. Unity and MCCOdes are completely different, but each provide a good starting point for making a game. HTML5 (canvas) yes, real time, graphical. Learn more coding techniques. It doesn't need to be C#. I just prefer it, could be Java (I actually like this), Python or C++. Just not PHP for game development. Swift could also be a good choice, but not free to release on APP store I heard.

Maybe he doesnt know anything else exist? Either way, Text Based PHP games are not going to be around much longer EXCEPT for the ones that already exist with HTML5. You may be able to get lucky and push one with a lot of jQuery and neat effects with JavaScript but since you starting out, I doubt it would be possible. I would go with HTML5 Canvas, JS if you really want to make Web, or Start learning more C#. Since you are young, I would just learn knowledge of what is popular right now and C# has been for awhile. If you are really serious I would choose C#. You could prob throw together in some basic games, Tic Tac Toe, Connect 4 in a matter of days or weeks (max) depending on your current knowledge. What's you get the hang of things, you could move on to Unity 3d (also can do 2d). Unity 2d is like MC-Codes in a sense but for Graphics.

I believe he said game, not a text based game.

I said depending how the file is set up. Several factors to consider. Database's are files themselves, its just they are in a certain format. When we write a query, it scans the file(database) for what we looking for and returns it. IF and IF I was using a file to store item stuff which would most likely NEVER happen since I would want Staff to create/modify/delete items, and if it was somehow exploited by a staff member, it would be more damaging then having a database destroyed. The database can fixed, or you could upload a back up. If the file system gets compromised, chances are, your database is to and everything bout your game/site is just screwed. But IF I was using a file to store item data, it would need some careful planning and prob consist of more then one file depending on how many items would be used. I coded some games where I hard-coded the item into the game. The games only used 1-3 items.

Since you said you been dabbling with php & c#, would really depend on the game you make. I would go with html5 for web or c#. Since you are younger and want ti make a game, php should be your last resort. Go hard, go c#'

This is amazing. I wonder if the filesize is smaller then a png/gif filesize... ;\ Could be the future of drawing =]

I agree. I learned Visual Basic from a book from a Library. PHP was fairly different from Visual Basic, so I got a book from the library and learned about PHP that was as well.

I would disagree related to execution time. Depending how the include file is set up, it could be faster then fetching from the database and assigning records to variables. I will agree that it limits the staff panel as they will need access to the file instead of fetching and inserting to a database, There could be work-a-rounds for this as well though.

Here is a video preview of the finished product: Your need to upload the two new files and modify a few area's on your header.php file. I included instructions in the zip as well as screenshots of the header area's that needs modifying highlighted by green that are the new additions. Click 2 Download It only took around 70 lines of code to make this happen..

I told someone I will be trying to turn mc-codes into a non refreshing with not having to modify every file, after glancing over the source a bit, I realize this will be possible. I will post the link to watch my stream coding session around midnight eastern which is 6 1/2 hours from this post.

This game: http://samuraiassault.com/login.php ? If it is, I would try to find some fairly decent size Ninja anime forums and see if they can sell you some advertising space in there header for 20-30$/month... Then use the rest on another related forum... =]

Does it have any install DVDs? Might need driver. You might want to try the other cable port.

Similar to my system I was doing for PC in C# for a crime based project. The one I started in php is sort of weird, but powerful. If you are going threw with this, I would make a Hook for "Features" such as "Crime" so people can over-ride displays, certain features, extend things,e ct.
