Ghostface Posted June 20 Posted June 20 Hi everyone, I just wanted to say a quick hello.. ✌️ I’ve loved classic browser games since the early 2000s. I basically grew up with them, and somehow that passion never really went away. These days I run a few small browser games myself, and I’ve also started taking over older or abandoned games when it makes sense. Not because of some "big master plan", but because I think it’s a shame how many of these games simply disappear. So that’s basically my background. I’m not here to promote my own projects. I’m mainly here to connect with people who still care about this kind of game and discover new projects. And honestly, I still enjoy playing games by other developers just for that little time-travel feeling.. 😊 Also, if my wording sounds a bit strange sometimes, sorry about that. English is not my native language..😶 1 Quote
rockwood Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Welcome! I know exactly what you mean about the "time-travel feeling" of classic browser games. It's great to see people still passionate about keeping them alive. Just curious—what browser games are you currently playing these days? Always interested in discovering new projects. Hope you enjoy your time here! 1 Quote

Ghostface Posted Saturday at 09:33 PM Author Posted Saturday at 09:33 PM Thank you so much for the warm welcome! The games that really made me fall in love with classic browser games were Ghetto Games, OGame, Land of Destruction, Urban Dead, NightCreeps and Space Universe. Some of them are offline now, sadly, and that always feels like a small piece of browser game history disappearing. Other games I’ve played over the years include Torn, Tribal Wars, Lordsgame and Freewar. 1 Quote
rockwood Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago Since I'm actually building a browser game inspired by the classics, I'd love to hear your opinion. Do you think there's still an audience for games like Torn, OGame, Urban Dead, and Land of Destruction, or has that era passed? What do you think a modern browser game would need to succeed today? 1 Quote

This might be better as its own topic instead of in someone elses introduction. But to answer your question: Building something YOU want to play. Include some mechanic that you think is unique that not many or no other games have. And pick an unique theme. Unless you can make a truly unique maffia game, stay way from that theme. There are so many out there. 1 Quote
Ghostface Posted 4 hours ago Author Posted 4 hours ago The audience for classic browser games is much smaller than it was during the golden years. There is no way around that. The market has changed a lot, and browser games are much more small niche today... But I do not believe the audience has disappeared completely. It is mostly a niche for nostalgic players now, and probably also for people who still enjoy slower, community driven games. For me personally, a big part of it is trying to preserve this kind of digital game culture and keep it alive as well as I can. I agree that a modern browser game needs something that gives it its own character, whether that is the theme or the mechanics or the community structure. Simply copying an old formula is not enough anymore. A clear unique idea makes much more sense. So yes, I believe there is still an audience. Not a huge mainstream audience, but a small and loyal one.. especially if the game can give players that old browser game feeling again. A small escape from busy everyday life and from a modern gaming world that often feels too loud, too fast, and too overloaded. If the game can offer that feeling and still give people a reason to return, I think it can work..😊 1 Quote
