David_1507 Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Hi, I have been thinking recently about the benefits of buying an existing game, over coding my own..and although coding my own game would be better in the long run, I don't have huge amounts of time spare at the moment (and I doubt I will have a lot of time in the coming 6-12 months!).. So I was wondering what sort of price i'd be looking at for a game (not too fussed on the theme) with maybe 10-20 daily players, decent layout and features. **Not too bothered about the income made from the game** Quote
a_bertrand Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Well you have basically 3 options: 1) Code all yourself and be sure it will be the game you want. Takes a lot of time, yet you will know it fully. 2) Use an engine as base code (free or not free), which should save you some time, and bring you some knowledge about how to do some of the work. Depending on the engine you may learn also bad ways of doing things and you may need time before knowing exactly how the engine does the things. 3) Buy an existing game, which will basically somehow freeze you in some way as the game is there, and if you have players I doubt you will trash all to change drastically the game. The advantage of this last one is that in no time you have your game. Honestly, the last option seems to be the worse for a game designer. Sure you would have a game quickly but it will not be YOUR game in the sense you will not design it from the beginning. It will not be your world but the world of somebody else. Even the story may not be exactly what you had in mind initially. If what you want is managing a game, then you should maybe partner with somebody as owning a game usually means a lot more than simply buying some code. Quote
David_1507 Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 I have decided to opt for the option of coding my own game. The pro's outweigh the con's! Quote
