    Game dev chats

What do you mean? Chat scripts to implement into browser games? I'm using phpfreechat and it's pretty easy to put into a game so that the player's username is the username in chat.
  2. I finally got a reply to the email I sent AYG 6 days ago:   Jordan - Sorry for the delayed response. We were having some minor issues on our network which have since been resolved. Thanks for your understanding and patience. Terry VanStory AYG Account Manager It doesn't answer another question I asked them too. I'm glad that they're finally back up, but worried about whether or not I should deposit more money with them if they consider their network being completely disfunctional for over a week (and wasting millions of pageviews) a "minor issue".
  3. I used them for my game project that I had this last summer and I registered for them a few weeks ago to check them out again, but most of their publishers that I would want to advertise on either have a very high CPC or have a low % of US/UK/CA visitors.
  4. I've used AdvertiseYourGame.com both as an advertiser and publisher and had good success with it, but for about the last week all of their banners show a PHP error in place of the banner. This isn't just on my sites, but all others that I've seen AYG banners on. I sent them an email a few days ago explaining this, but haven't gotten a reply back and it still isn't fixed. I would think that a web site owner would at least notice that there have been 0 ad impressions across their network within a day or two. Another ad network that I used last summer, PBBGAds.com has also been down for at least a month. I have been using Leet Media also which is a new network that doesn't have as many advertisers and publishers as AYG and I'm not getting nearly as much traffic from them as I was getting from AYG, but they are a good network with a good owner. Does anyone know the owner of AYG and have a better way to contact him? Does anyone have any other suggestions for advertising browser games?
  5. Are you also auctioning it off along with the site as a whole on the Digital Point forums? http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=2376059
  6. I haven't worked with Peter personally, but I am a hosting customer of W3 Theory and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. I've only been hosted there for about a month and right now my site has been down for a few hours and it's not the first time this has happened in the short time I've been with them. I can only imagine how upset my players are. There would normally be about 10-15 people online right now. He was quick to respond to a support ticket I had before I signed up, but the support ticket I filed while a customer took a lot longer to get a response (over a week I think). He does offer cheap hosting that allows some of the things that other hosts don't allow on shared hosting accounts (1 minute crons for example), but there are some negatives to hosting there.
  7. Hmm... if you only have two players online at a time, even a $5/month shared hosting plan should work for you if you don't have really high bandwidth pages. Do you know how much bandwidth you've been using?
  8. For the record, Kieran-R sold BBG Web Gaming in October 2011 and then just now (January 2012), I bought it from the person who bought it from him. Either during the transfer from him to the second owner or at some point during the time that the second owner had it, some things went wrong with the site, but I am working on fixing them. I hope to be an active website owner and I plan to grow this site and work hard to make it successful for everyone involved and make it worthwhile for game owners to add their game along with the voting link on their site. If anyone has any questions about the current state of BBG Web Gaming or anything related to it, feel free to contact me.
  9. Are you using the ezrpg engine? If so, there should be a modules folder if you have installed it correctly.
  10. In case you didn't know, the built-in PHP function time() returns the unix timestamp which is the number of seconds since January 1, 1970. You can use this by adding the number of seconds in a week (604800 as Nickson said) to the current timestamp when they register and put this in the database as their time of death (one week in the future). Then whenever the player does something in the game to extend the time, you just add to that number. If they extend their life time by an hour, you would add 3600 to that number for instance. Displaying their time left could be as simple as a short PHP script that takes the time of death minus the current time and converts the difference into weeks/days/hours/minutes/seconds and shows it in the header and updates each time a page is loaded. You could have a countdown running on the page too, but I don't have experience doing that. You don't need to and really shouldn't have a cron job running every second. Google 'PHP time() function' and you'll find what we're talking about. Edit: Also, checking to see if their life time has ran out would be done by checking to see if their life time number is less than the current timestamp.
  11. I've spent the last few weeks working hard on a game I'm making called Age of Rebellion. It uses the ezrpg engine as a base, but I've programmed a ton of custom/original mods to make it into a totally unique game. Here are the features I have done:   Travel to different locations and cities Hunt - battle beasts on public or privately owned land to earn xp, coins, and items Mine ores Smith - use ores to create bars, use bars along with wood to create weapons and armor Woodcut - use an axe to cut down trees to use for creating weapons and cooking food Fish - use a fishing pole to catch raw fish which can be cooked for food Cook - cook your fish to make them edible and eat them to heal yourself after battle Equip weapons and armor for battle and hunting Market - buy/sell any item at any price based on supply and demand Top Players List - move up in the ranks to become one of the greatest!   And these are the next few features that I will be working on in the coming days/weeks:   Battle people on the other side of the civil war Buy/sell/upgrade properties and collect taxes on them (hunting land, woods, mines, fishing pond) Start/join a clan   I'm starting to slowly advertise it now to try to get a few players so I can see what needs to be tweaked and/or fixed, but not so many that things get out of hand if anything goes wrong. Anyone have any advice on successfully launching a new game? Edit: The error when registering is now fixed. Please try registering again if you encountered it.
  12. I already posted this on the official ezrpg forums, but I decided to post it here as well so that more people have access to it. It's not a real mod written from ground up, but basically a tutorial on how to integrate the phpFreeChat script into your ezrpg game. Step 1: Download phpFreeChat from their website: http://www.phpfreechat.net Step 2: Upload it to your host. My script assumes that you uploaded it to the folder at /phpfreechat-1.3/ so if you have it in a folder called something else or have it inside a few folders, then you will have to change the "require_once" line of code. Step 3: Go to your modules folder and create a new folder in it called Chat and inside it create a php file called index.php. Then copy and paste the following code into that file:   <?php defined('IN_EZRPG') or exit; class Module_Chat extends Base_Module { public function start() { requireLogin(); require_once ($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']). "/phpfreechat-1.3/src/phpfreechat.class.php"; $params = array(); $params["title"] = "Chat"; $params["nick"] = $this->player->username; $params['firstisadmin'] = false; $params["serverid"] = md5(__FILE__); $params["debug"] = false; $chat = new phpFreeChat( $params ); $this->tpl->display('header.tpl'); $chat->printChat(); $this->tpl->display('footer.tpl'); } } ?>   Step 4: Customize the script and add parameters as you see fit. I recommend adding the line $params["frozen_nick"] = true; after the last $params line so that your players can't change their chat nickname to something other than their username in the game. There are lot of other parameters, features, and ways to customize it so check out the phpFreeChat site for more info on this. Step 5: Put a link somewhere in your header.tpl file or anywhere else that links to index.php?mod=Chat If anyone has any questions or comments, please post them and I'll try to answer them. Enjoy!
  13. At the risk of sounding hypocritical, I'm just going to give a summary of what the formula I came up with does rather than give it out.... It gets a random number around your strength plus damage and then subtracts from that a random number around the vitality plus armor protection of the opponent. Then it calculates whether or not this hit should be missed by picking a random number close to your dexterity divided by a random number close to their agility and if it's under 1.00 then you miss.
  14. I've come up with a formula that works, but I need to do some testing still to find out if each attribute is even. If someone can just put all of their stat points into strength and win every battle (for example) then that wouldn't be very fair or fun. I'm figuring it out though.
  15. Does anyone have any RPG battle formula ideas that they'd like to share? I'm trying to come up with a mathematical formula that would make each attribute different, but roughly equal. I'm using the ezrpg engine so the attributes that are built in are: Strength - This increases the damage you do in battle, and increases your weight limit so you can carry more items. Vitality - This increases the amount of health you have and decreases the amount of damage you receive in battle. Agility - This increases your chance to completely dodge and attack and take no damage in battle! Dexterity - This helps you aim better so you are less likely to miss your opponent. but I could change that to only two or three attributes. In addition to these four attributes, the weapons also have a damage amount and the armor has a protection amount. If anyone has any ideas, please post them. I might also be willing to pay a little for someone experienced in this sort of thing to help me come up with a battle system that will make my game fun and fair so send me a private message if you'd like to offer your services. Thanks, Jordan
