Nunnker Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Hi, I'm new here and have followed this site for some time now. I don't develop games, but I play text based browser games. I've been wondering about the future of text based browser games. It seems like there aren't many new ones being released that are of real quality. There are some that I have been around awhile like Immortal Night, TrentonMade (now basically dead), those sex games Seduction City and Porn Star Wars, Samurai Legend, Mafia Returns etc, but I'm a bit concerned about the current state of browser games. It seems like they are on the decline, which is saddening, because I've always loved them. I was fascinated about that one project Sniko was working on, Viking Era, but he hasn't posted in awhile and was curious about that game, if it will ever see a release. Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon? Quote
TheMasterGeneral Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I really think that many Text RPGs are just rehashed versions of each other. From my personal experience (from both a player and developer POV), most games have the same core mechanics, just tweaked slightly, if at all. Attack, train, lucky boxes, repeat. Innovation is needed, imho. Quote

Innovation is needed, imho. Exactly, also the market really isn't great for them anymore. The likelihood of an owner making any money back from the time and money spent on the creation of the game really depends on if they manage to grab an user base. And there's a number of users out there who prefer to play the same style of game over and over, with a few theme / style changes here and there. But then you get the users that only look for one thing. Uniqueness. What makes your game stand out from the crowd, what unique style of gameplay can you offer me. So realistically it's finding the balance between both of these, good market research and marketing and an owner who is passionate about their game that will lead to success in a PBBG game these days Quote
