3D vs Hand Drawn NPC/Advertisement vs 'Real' images.

I have dabbled with DAZ, and I'm a decent artist when it comes to altered tracing. The problem with DAZ is I am finding it hard to find a variety of facial/hair designs and armor styles that suit the time frame and area I'm using (Ancient China). I'm highly tempted to give a week over to my drawing abilities, but I'm not so good with buildings or landscapes, which I would really prefer as 'real' images.

So is it worth to put a lot of time and effort into getting images? Can there be a happy medium between these three styles? I have seen successful games for both 3D/real and HandDrawn. Does either one tend to be 'better' for the players who join?

While Daz is a beginner tool for 3d, you can look at modeling your own hair clothing, people, props ect in a program like Modo. this makes your possibilities endless. The advantage I find with 3d is that once you have your basics set up, you can get an infinite number of images from a 3d object that never falters in style or appearance verses the task of having to hand draw over and over having small details change each time you have to redraw the object for a new image. Micky mouse is a great example of these changes.
