Re: What's your motivation?

I highly doubt thats what you do.

You've already said you've made quite a bit of money.

Therefore, you are, in fact, learning to program for a profit.

No. I am learning to satisfy myself. However ofcourse I am no fool, and if I can make money whilst having fun I will do it. For example, I think Football is a hobby, and there are proffesionals who earn money doing what they like, if they werent in the position they are in they would still maintain playing the game with their friends and improving themselfs.

You really think if the entire NFL was disbanded and they weren't allowed to open a new one, the players would still train and pump themselves full of drugs to play a football game? No, athletes play to make money, period.

Also, if you are making any profit for any reason, you are in it for the money, no matter what way you spin it.

Well I could go on all day... I simply am not interested in the money aspect in this. I simply want to improve my skills, as I find it interesting and I am intrigued by it.

Also I was reffering to Soccer [sarcasm] :-D I mean if you are going to use English then use it propally... colours not colors, and Football not the Fake Rugby :-D [/sarcasm]

I still think people regard sports as a hobby, I mean I train at a basketball club even though I know I wont make it as a proffesional, its just because I like playing it - however if someone offered me a job as a basketball player I would take it.

I assume you are a full time and qualified programmer then. If so then ofocurse you will be interested in money however it seems to me that you were ignorant enough to jump into the argument and judge me before stopping and thinking what the initial argument and discussion is about, and that is; Cronus stated noone would be here if it was not for the money, and its untrue.

I think you might want to think a bit more about your position then, as this community is built largely around commercial game engines, commercial mods to those game engines, and the promotion and advertisement of web-based games. What few open source games are mentioned here are done as an afterthought, most often because someone here saw it and said "I bet we could make it better!", and created what would remain forever an empty testament to that momentary ambition.

Also, I'd like to point out I didn't jump in without realizing your background - much to the contrary, after having read a number of your idealistic posts, your own descriptions of your background, and your wonderful dissertation of jQuery/Ajax, I feel I have a pretty good grasp on where you're coming from. I was in my late teens once with more ambition than I had knowledge or experience to enact... but that was many years ago, during which time I've learned a certain measure of practicality ;)

Re: What's your motivation?

You did state you are not interested in the money aspect right?

so wanna do my entire website for experience :-D

ill offer you money but obviously since your not interested in that you will turn it down and do it for free correct?

gained experience such a rare thing.

im not trying to argue but EVERYONE is in it for the money EVERYONE...

you want to learn therefore be good and good programmers get paid... need i say more?

Re: What's your motivation?

Money is a bonus when creating a game, i personally have made almost no money from games :(

For me. It is the satisfaction of having people stoked on what you have created, however large or small the figure of members.

Well I like being here, and I feel I can contribute both by helping others and by learning from the members here. I still believe not everyone is here for the money.

Well then I my apologies I jumped to assumptions :-)

Re: What's your motivation?

At first I built my game to promote my books. Now I'm addicted to building out the world. I had hoped to make money and I have made some, but the amount of work... we'll, I think McDonald's pays better.

That is so true lol McDonalds would probably pay better than 50% of game owners profit.
