How would you do it... ? (gameplay)
be-the-hero.net replied to be-the-hero.net's topic in Game Projects
Apparently a temporary unavailability ...I hope. Yeah, I think I see your point. On one hand, we want classes to provide some unique/differentiated gameplay, and on the other hand, we don't know before hand what would be good choices and what not. What I think is also important to keep in mind is that this is a story-oriented game, with very low emphasis on gaining skills and stats (No XP, levels, etc.) ...the different classes is more a way to enable different story paths or influence the way the player tackles various situations. (the rogue would steal and hide, the bard will negotiate and amuse, the wizard will use a magic trick or an illusion...) There are also no constraints nor rules. You could be bitten by a vampire and become a vampire yourself, or become a necromancer. This would not alter the gameplay, since it's reading a story, but in the first case you may be able to fly but be burned in the sunlight, while in the other you could talk to a dead body. Since it's story oriented, there are almost no boundaries. The lifespan of the hero is also probably short. Once you read a few chapters, you finished the adventure! -
Hi, I presented here a small game prototype a while back: http://be-the-hero.net It's nowhere at the moment but I'd like to bring it to the next level once I get time. The thing is, I don't know exactly "how" it'll be and I'd like some feedback from you of what you think would be good, bad, or what you would do. 1) classes Is it a good idea to select a class when you start? ...or should you all start as "adventurer" and pick-up new abilities along the way? 2) abilities How should they work? My idea was to use dice rolls, when rolling above a certain threshold (difficulty), you succeed, else, you fail the task. I've basically got two ideas in head: - either your mastery of a skill decides how many dices you throw (from 1 to 5) - or your skill level (from 0 to infinity) is added to a roll of 2 dices 3) fights How should they work? Should it be working exactly like any other ability? Or should they have their own mechanics? In the first case, I may be a bit dull/unsatisfying (combat decided in a single dice roll) In the second case, fighting may attract too much focus, at the expense of the story and using other abilities How would you do it? 3) suggestions what classes / abilities would you like to see? (Remember, it's a text based game, so there are almost no limitations!) Thanks!

Hello, I've made a small web game here: http://be-the-hero.net It is very simple. Basically, an interactive story everyone can edit. (...It could also evolve using stuff like health points, skill tests with dices, etc.) However, in order for this to work out, the most important part are the people taking part and playing it. ...and that's one thing I'm really poor at! I'd like to gather some people interested in this and form a small community around the game. People who want to play it, or contribute to it ...and be part of it, in the broadest sense. Even giving feedback of what things you like, dislike or would like to see would help us steer its evolution. Playing it, writing for it, coding a small feature, everything is welcome. You are welcome! You can also contact me directly at [email protected] Thanks for reading, See you later perhaps, Arnaud

1000Ways - Just like an interactive book

Hi, I started something a bit similar as you here: be-the-hero.net I would be curious to see what you have though, perhaps it's similar. You can also count me in as beta tester. Cheers, Arnaud -
I also have the feeling that the idea is nice, but it's hmm ...it's not enough. People come by, take a look at it and go, and I can totally understand them as I would do the same. It's not enough to keep them entertained. The question is: what's missing the most? - is it that you can see anything at any moment and not "die" (and therefore no challenge)? - is it the missing "hero" part with attributes (and growing better, stronger)? - is it the lack of community (looks like abandoned stuff)? - is it the storyline/choices which isn't exciting enough? - is it the lack of creativity (I want to make my own book in my language!)? I think I could focus on any of these points, however, it would be interesting to know which one you think is the most critical one! Which one do you want to see coming to life that would make you enjoy the game? :)

Actually, the current layout was already made to have the same ratio as the iPhone displays so that it could be ported one day more easily. I also thought of a mini kickstarter project to get things running and raise a bit of awareness. But I have the feeling that if I don't manage to raise at least a little awareness/interest on the web, then the two others will fail also. It'll just be an app at the bottom of the barel nobody downloads, or a kickstarter project getting only five bucks. So, before going there, I would like to at least be able to make something people would enjoy playing on the web for free. :)

Wow, crazy!!!! I wonder how they managed to get such a popularity!!! I barely manage to get only a couple of users looking at the site! ...as for promoting it, I don't even know how I could do it well. (where to post, who to contact, etc. It's really quite difficult) I'm already grateful for a few of you guys looking at it. Cheers, Arnaud

The look is indeed really great, the artist/web designer made a great job! Top notch. ...for the game itself, I must confess it's not really my cup of tea.

Yeah, that true. I just added a "obscenities sandbox". In the future, I plan to use some sort of reviewing process, that another user has to review and agree the change before it takes effect, and that it can be reverted back to an older version ...but before I do that, I would like to introduce "abilities" and a dice system to influence the game/story.

What is a pity though is that people seem to just edit the first page to post some obscenities ...:(

Hi, thanks for the great feedback! I appreciate it :) Yeah, it was intentional that the pages are editable for everyone. That way, everyone can contribute by enhancing or extending the story. I also wondered about making several "books" so that anyone can make its own adventure, in any language. As for the story, I extracted it from an amateur gamebook freely available on internet, but I have difficulties finding/contacting the authors.

Hello, I just wanted to know what you think of this: be-the-hero.net ...that's it :)
